Empire & Vice
Episode 5: The Breaking Point
6:00 AM — Ethan’s Penthouse, Manhattan
Ethan stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. The face looking back at him was gaunt, dark circles shadowing his eyes. His once-unshakable confidence was cracking, and he knew it.
The whiskey bottle on the counter tempted him. One sip to steady his nerves, to silence the chaos in his head.
His phone buzzed.
Lena: Meet me in one hour. We need to talk.
Ethan exhaled sharply. He had handed her a weapon against Marcus, but what she did with it was out of his control. And control was the one thing he couldn’t afford to lose.
With a final glance at the untouched whiskey, he turned away. He had bigger battles to fight.
7:15 AM — A Café in Brooklyn
Lena was already seated when Ethan arrived, a coffee in hand and a folder on the table.
“You look terrible,” she said, not bothering with pleasantries.
Ethan smirked, sliding into the seat across from her. “Flattery suits you.”
She ignored his sarcasm and pushed the folder toward him. “I looked into the files you gave me on Marcus.”
Ethan flipped it open. “And?”
“There’s something bigger here,” Lena said, lowering her voice. “Shell companies, offshore accounts… but the real story? Marcus has ties to a private equity firm with a history of hostile takeovers. If he succeeds in forcing you out, ColeTech won’t just be under new leadership—it’ll be stripped for parts.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched. “So it was never just about me.”
Lena nodded. “Marcus isn’t just after your position. He wants your empire broken down and sold to the highest bidder.”
Ethan leaned back, exhaling. “And now I have proof.”
Lena tapped the folder. “Question is, what are you going to do with it?”
9:00 AM — ColeTech Headquarters
Ethan strode through the glass doors, his mind racing. Marcus wasn’t just a rival—he was a vulture. If Ethan didn’t act fast, everything he built would be dismantled piece by piece.
Daniel met him in his office, arms crossed. “You’re late.”
Ethan tossed the folder on his desk. “We have a bigger problem.”
Daniel skimmed through the contents, his expression darkening. “Damn it. If this gets out—”
“It won’t,” Ethan interrupted. “Not yet.”
Daniel looked up. “You have a plan?”
Ethan smirked. “Always.”
12:30 PM — Marcus’s Office
Marcus barely looked up as Ethan entered. “You just can’t stay away, can you?”
Ethan dropped the folder onto Marcus’s desk. “I know what you’re doing.”
Marcus flipped through the pages, unimpressed. “And?”
Ethan leaned in. “If you don’t back off, I’ll make sure every investor, every regulator, and every journalist in the city knows exactly what you’re up to.”
Marcus chuckled. “You think you can threaten me, Ethan? You’re the one they see as unstable. You’re the one they’re waiting to replace.”
Ethan smirked. “Maybe. But if I go down, I’m taking you with me.”
Marcus’s expression darkened. “Careful, Ethan. You’re playing a dangerous game.”
Ethan stepped back. “I always have.”
8:00 PM — Lena’s Apartment
Ethan knocked once before Lena opened the door, raising an eyebrow. “You look like hell.”
Ethan chuckled. “I’ve heard worse.”
She let him in, closing the door behind him. “Did it work?”
“For now,” Ethan said. “Marcus knows I have leverage, but this isn’t over.”
Lena studied him. “You’re running on fumes, Ethan. How long do you think you can keep this up?”
He exhaled, rubbing his temples. “As long as I have to.”
She hesitated, then handed him a glass of water. “You need to take a breath. You’re not invincible.”
Ethan took the glass, meeting her gaze. “No. But I can’t afford to break.”
She sighed. “Then let’s make sure you don’t.”
For the first time in weeks, Ethan felt something unfamiliar.
Hope.
But he also knew one thing—this was only the beginning.
