Chapter 9 – The Illusion of Control Ethan Cole had won. Marcus Langley was gone. The board had chosen him over his greatest rival. He was still the undisputed king of ColeTech. But victory felt hollow. As he sat in his penthouse office, overlooking the city he ruled, Ethan felt something creeping in—a deep, unsettling silence. No immediate threats. No battles to fight. And yet, he felt more vulnerable than ever. His hands trembled as he poured himself a drink. Whiskey. Neat. He wasn’t sure if he needed it to celebrate or to silence the thoughts racing through his mind. The phone rang, snapping him out of his daze. Daniel Weston. Ethan answered. “What is it?” Daniel’s voice was tight. “We have a problem.” Ethan downed the whiskey in one gulp. “Of course we do.” --- The Ghosts of Marcus Langley ColeTech’s legal team had gathered in the boardroom when Ethan arrived. Their faces were grim, their eyes avoiding direct contact. Daniel gestured toward the head of legal, Sylvia Harris. “Tell him.” Sylvia adjusted her glasses. “It’s Marcus.” Ethan frowned. “He’s gone. Why are we still talking about him?” Sylvia hesitated. “Because he’s not done with you.” She slid a confidential report across the table. “This morning, Marcus filed a lawsuit against you and ColeTech. He’s accusing you of fraud, embezzlement, and corporate espionage.” Ethan clenched his jaw. “That’s ridiculous.” “It doesn’t matter if it’s ridiculous,” Daniel said. “He has evidence.” Ethan scoffed. “Fabricated evidence.” “Maybe,” Sylvia admitted. “But it’s enough to drag you into court. Enough to make the board nervous. Enough to send your stock price into a free fall.” Ethan exhaled sharply. He had expected retaliation from Marcus, but not this quickly. The man had planned for his defeat. Sylvia continued, “And there’s something else. Marcus is giving interviews. He’s spinning a narrative that you’re unstable, reckless, and unfit to run this company.” Ethan felt a pulse of rage. Marcus was trying to do from the outside what he had failed to do from within. “Damage control,” Ethan said. “I want a full media response drafted by the end of the day. We discredit him before he gains momentum.” Sylvia nodded, but she didn’t look convinced. Ethan turned to Daniel. “And you—find out where he’s getting his information.” Daniel hesitated. Ethan narrowed his eyes. “What?” Daniel sighed. “There’s a leak inside ColeTech, Ethan. Someone is feeding Marcus insider details.” The words hit Ethan like a gunshot. Someone close to him was betraying him. Again. --- A Dangerous Gamble Ethan’s first instinct was to go straight to Victor DeLuca. The underworld power broker had saved him before—digging up dirt on Marcus, ensuring the board vote fell in Ethan’s favor. But Victor’s help always came with a price. And Ethan knew that asking him to eliminate the leak would cross a line he might not come back from. But maybe he was already past that point. He met Victor in a dimly lit lounge, the scent of cigar smoke thick in the air. The man sat at a private table, sipping a glass of bourbon, his piercing gaze fixed on Ethan as he approached. Victor smirked. “I hear congratulations are in order.” Ethan sat down. “And yet, I’m still dealing with Marcus.” Victor leaned back. “That’s the thing about enemies, Ethan. They don’t die just because you want them to.” Ethan exhaled. “I need to find the leak inside my company.” Victor took a slow sip of his drink. “And when you do?” Ethan hesitated. “I’ll handle it.” Victor chuckled. “No, you won’t. You’re too controlled. Too calculated.” His smirk faded. “But let me give you a reality check—if there’s a traitor in your ranks, they won’t stop. You need to make an example out of them.” Ethan’s mind raced. He wasn’t a killer. But he also couldn’t afford another betrayal. Victor watched him closely. “I can handle it for you. All I need is a name.” Ethan’s throat went dry. One word, and it would be over. But could he live with himself afterward? His phone buzzed. A message from Daniel: "We found the leak. Call me." Ethan stood. “I’ll take care of it.” Victor smirked. “Let’s hope you do.” --- The Truth Hurts Back at ColeTech, Ethan entered Daniel’s office. Daniel stood by the window, his expression unreadable. “Tell me,” Ethan said. Daniel turned. “It’s Lena.” The words slammed into Ethan like a physical blow. “That’s impossible.” Daniel slid a folder onto the desk. “She met with Marcus three times in the past month. Phone records, messages—it’s all there.” Ethan felt the room spin. Lena had helped him bring Marcus down. She had been the only person who ever challenged him, saw him for who he was. And now she had betrayed him. Daniel’s voice was cautious. “What do you want to do?” Ethan closed his eyes, inhaling sharply. Marcus had set this up perfectly. He had made it so that Ethan’s greatest victory would turn into his greatest loss. Lena was the leak. The one person he thought he could trust. And now, he had a choice to make. ---
