Chapter Sixteen December gave way to a merciless, frigid January. I went to the doctor, who prodded and palpated me, listened to my heart and lungs, took blood, had me pee in a cup to check once more if I were pregnant… All tests pointed to me being a hearty, healthy, non-pregnant woman. “But have you considered talking with someone?” she asked me, when the exam was finishing up. “You don’t seem yourself, if you don’t mind my saying so.” And she handed me a card for a therapist in town she recommended. I smiled at her, took the card, and slipped it into my bag, to mingle with all the other bottom-feeder purse detritus, never to be seen or heard from again.
