Chapter 11 In the days that followed, Sable didn’t ask for help from anyone. She put on her pants and roomy shirt and went to work. She learned all by herself how to cinch up a saddle and how to take care of it with saddle soap and oil. Next, she got to know the horse. She petted him, let him smell her scent, and spoke to him so he would know her voice. “I love you, boy,” she said softly. “How about we go for a ride out on the prairie? Now, since you know your way around, I’ll give you plenty of rein so you can go wherever you want. If you’re thirsty, find a lake, or if you’re hungry, chow down on some nice green grass.
