The whole town of Silver Vein turned up at my saloon to try and convince their fellow citizens that they were uniquely qualified to be our first mayor. There were even a fair amount of people I didn’t recognize. Lots of Europeans and even some South Americans were in attendance. Despite the fact that nobody had so much as seen a sliver of silver in the history of the town, word and hope seemed to have traveled far and wide, finding new people desperate or foolish enough to throw their lives away. And for some reason that will never make sense (because it flat doesn’t), a lot of people were attracted to and moving to Silver Vein because of Ely Turner’s Meteor Hole. As if the one thing that every town needed was a big hole in the dirt.
