10 BLACK BEN Fishing proved to be harder than Ben felt it should be. The river was flush with snowmelt and it was moving at a good rate of speed, and that, combined with how cold the water was, meant that Ben could stand in the rushing water for only so long before he was certain he would freeze to death. He could see fish floating by under his legs, but by the time he made a grab for one, it was gone. The fish were entirely too slippery. He tried a number of different approaches. First, he leaned over and held his hand under the water in the hope some fish might simply swim right up to it, expecting it to be something it could eat.
