The more he saw of John Buffalo, the less Ben liked. The man was always looking at him like he had dark plans for him. Lyle seemed friendly enough, but that necklace of ears gave Ben pause. He couldn’t help staring at them. Ears are weird, Ben thought, when they aren’t attached to a head, which prompted Ben to look at Lyle’s ears. Heck, they’re weird even when they are attached to a head. He found himself returning repeatedly to Lyle’s ears, then he started looking at everyone’s ears. He became obsessed with looking at ears, and all because of Lyle’s necklace.
He didn’t look at John Buffalo’s ears, though. He figured to even peek at that man would cause a reaction he would just as soon avoid. One of the few times he braved so much as a quick glance, he found the half-breed
