21 We figured we were a couple of hours behind the Comancheros, what with our stopping to take care of Merle and do an accounting of the dead, and the necessary taking of scalps, and the taking of guns, and Hap burying the two dead cow-boys and saying some words. The weapons haul, it must be said, was a bit of a let-down. There were a few old Colt Navys and Colt Armys, a couple of bone-handled knives, but no shiny Winchester rifles, which is all I cared about. Only old rifles, which might explain why they’d all died and we hadn’t. We were driving our horses hard, but it seemed the people we were chasing were driving their horses just as hard, and they had a lot more horses at their disposal.
