4 BLACK BEN When Black Ben looked around, all he saw was flatness. The sky and the land merged together into one blurry line in every direction. Even the sky was white and bland, with no sign of the sun at all. It was hard to know which way was what. He stood up in the saddle and looked around, but he saw no dust clouds in the distance in any direction. Could it be he wasn’t being followed? No, that didn’t seem right. The fella he had shot, Abe, worked for the Marshal in Amarillo, and one of the other guys at the card table had told him his brother was Frank Kilhoe, the Texas Ranger. If what he had read about the rangers were true, the ranger would come after him. His only chance was to make his way to the Robbers Roost and hide out there, where he would be safe. He needed to head west
