6 BLACK BEN Ben had never felt so cold in his life. An icy wind had been blowing all day, and he'd spent a good deal of time with his hands in his armpits, trying to keep them from going numb, leading the horse west with his knees. The sun set and it got dark and the chill got mean. He tried to create a shelter, but had to give up on it when he could no longer feel his fingers.
