41 “He just left me here? You reckon he forgives me?” “I reckon he didn’t trust his feelings on the matter,” I said. “Never been to Silver Vein before. Maybe if I ever get out of jail, I can prospect for silver,” Ben said. “There’s no silver in Silver Vein. Only that what’s in the name,” I said, because it was true. Only one man had ever found silver in Silver Vein, and he was long gone. After breakfast, we packed up our bedrolls, kicked some dirt on the fire, and set out. If we kept a reasonable pace, we’d make Silver Vein sometime in the evening. But like I said, I was in no rush on account of I sort of felt bad for the boy and wasn’t in a big hurry to lock him up.
