24 BLACK BEN It was the middle of the night when the horses started to pick up their pace. They were almost home, and they knew it. Ben could see bits and pieces of fleeting shadows on either side of him, big rocks shooting up and out of the ground. He could see they were coming up on a deep canyon. It was growing lighter, and Ben could see and feel the dust in the air from all the horses, with Lyle out front leading the way. He watched as Lyle pulled up on his horse’s reins, pulled out his Colt, and shot it into the air. Ben could hear the shot echo all around him. It wasn’t long before there was a responding shot from somewhere above or maybe behind them. They continued on and the sandstone grew around them, closing in and embracing them in their walls.
