29 I could see the whole ambush from the top of the ridge. I could see everything except Frank. I saw Hap and Baxter and Horse—even though I wasn’t there to run the show, Horse still knew what to do—were racing back the way they had come. But somehow, there were four men on horseback standing there, blocking the way out. Then there were the eight riders I had already seen came out from where they had hidden themselves. Twelve men closing in on them from both sides, all with rifles. The fight was over before it began. Hap put his hands up, and then Baxter followed suit and that was that. Two men came forward and reached over and took Hap and Baxter’s weapons. Then—and in some ways, this was the worst part—they took Horse’s weapons, too. Which meant I had lost yet another fancy Winchester
