I was surprise to receive a message from Judy that I had been selected as executive assistant and I had to report the next day as well. Even Shiela was surprised.
“Maybe they already know who you really are? That you are the son of the CEO of Prime Development Corp?” said Shiela.
“No, I don’t think so,” I replied shaking my head. “ I just put my home address but I did not put any contact number. I also didn’t put Prime Development as my previous work.
“Then he must have taken by your charm,” she added. I just let out a mischievous smile.
“Should I take the job?”
“Of course! Are you crazy? We came here for that. We don’t have to look for another place to find work anymore.”
Shiela was right, but I don’t know why I felt anxious all of a sudden. Fear grew in my chest.
“Why? What’s wrong? Suddenly, you hesitated to accept the job.”
“Adam’s Clothing is a big company, Shiela. They have high expectations of their employees. What if I make mistakes? Or I cannot do my job properly?”
“Your company is big as well. Why do you fear in working in a big company now?”
“Because my father always tells me that I am not good.”
“Oh, Katherine… Don’t think like that. You can do that job right, I believe in you,” Shiela reassured me.
Aside from the big responsibility that comes with being an executive assistant, another fear that grew in me is how to approach Leon Adams. I want to please him. I don’t want to disappoint him because he believes in me.
I look for some formal attire in my luggage as soon as we reached the apartment. Judy said that I will be on training for a month before Leon evaluates if I can do the job. I don’t want to miss it anymore.
It was eight o’clock in the morning when I reported to work. I wore a pencil cut skirt, a white tank top covered with dark gray suit, and a red stiletto which made me taller by two inches. My Dad tells me that I should always be presentable to everyone I meet. That’s one way of impress anyone.
“This will be your office from now on,” Judy told me handing me a swivel chair. “You will be under my care for three weeks, after that, I will be out for my maternity leave. You need to do your job properly, okay?”
“Yes, I promise to give my best,” I replied with a smile.
“Please do. Honestly, I don’t expect you to be hired,” she whispered while explains the job one by one.
“Because I didn’t pass the exam?”
“Hmmm… That’s one. You also don’t have job experience. Sir Leon is strict at work. Many have been fired simply because of one mistake,” she warned me.
“That’s scary.”
“Yes, it is. But I guess I know now why he hired you among all the applicants yesterday.”
“Why?”
“You are beautiful and charming. And because of that, I have to warn you again.”
“Warn about what?”
“Sir Leon is a certified womanizer and tear jerker in this town. Don’t fall for his charm and flirtatious acts.”
“Is Sir Leon unmarried yet?”
Judy shook her head.
“No. But I heard he was being forced to marry one of their business partner’s daughter. But the woman is still in US by this time. Maybe, he will marry the woman the she gets home.”
“He is getting married?” I don’t know why I felt regret. Maybe because I heard he was also being forced by his parents. I know how it felt.
“How old is Sir Leon, if I may ask?”
“Thirty-four,” Judy replied. “See? You are too young for him. Don’t believe every sweet word he says.”
“Don’t worry, he will not fall for my charm either. He hired me because he felt pity I ran away from my parent’s house and now I need money to pay for my apartment.”
“Actually, you look smart and elegant. However, you also look innocent and naïve. Have you had a boyfriend?”
I shook my head. I cannot consider a good relationship a week Harry became my boyfriend who was my classmate in college. The moment he tried to kiss me, I lost my interest and immediately broke up with him.
I also cannot consider Kit as a serious relationship. We just pretended to be lovers to drive away his ex-girlfriend. I ended the relationship right away when Kit wanted to make the relationship real.
I don’t hate men. But I don’t want how clingy they were with me. Generally, they want s*x. I can’t imagine myself having a man on top of me kissing and licking my body – just like what I have watched on porn one time with my friends.
“Okay, enough of that conversation because we have a lot of things to do today,” Judy cuts my thought. She guided me inside Leon Adam’s office.
"Sir Leon usually arrives at nine o'clock. There's a coffee table on this side. You have to make him coffee every day. Black coffee; he doesn't like cream and sugar."
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
"Since you will be answering phone calls the whole day, you will discuss it with him the next day, just to remind him of his schedule for today. Who to call back, with whom he has a meeting... Are we clear?"
“Yes.”
They returned to their office table as Judy continues to train her.
"Don't transfer calls in his office right away. You have to ask him first if he wants to talk to that person on the telephone or not."
I nodded again.
"If someone wants to set a meeting with him, you also have to ask him."
I seem to see what Astrid’s job is, my father’s secretary. And Astrid was an efficient and dependable secretary because she decides on her own sometimes. Astrid doesn't depend on my father; it's the other way around. My Dad cannot work properly if Astrid is not on his office. Dad is dependent on his secretary.
I want to be like Astrid. I will make Leon dependent on me too.
