Eleanor stumbled from the bank’s lobby into the chill of the afternoon, Mia clutching her arm, “Ellie what did you do” her voice trembled, Eleanor’s heart pounded as she met her sister’s wide eyes, “I signed” she whispered, every word thick with consequence, Mia’s breath hitched, panic and relief warring in her gaze, “You what” she repeated, “A contract marriage with Magnus Carrington” Eleanor said, voice brittle as ice, they broke into a run toward the gallery, each step echoing the irrevocable choice Eleanor had madeInside Reed & Co. Art the air tasted of desperation and paint thinner, Chloe hovered by the reception desk eyes alight with worry, “Eleanor you look like death warmed over” she said, rushing forward to embrace her friend, Eleanor closed her eyes against the noise in her head, “I had to” she murmured, Chloe’s arms tightened around her shoulder, “Tell me everything” she breathed, guiding Eleanor toward the back office where Richard sat hunched over spreadsheets, reading glasses sliding down his nose, his face hollow with exhaustion“Father” Eleanor said softly, Richard looked up startled his features etched in lines of worry, “They’re taking the sculptures tomorrow” he rasped, Eleanor sank into the chair opposite him, Chloe pressed a hand to his arm, “There’s a solution” Eleanor said, voice raw, Richard’s brows shot up, “What solution” he demanded, Eleanor took a trembling breath, “I agreed to marry Magnus Carrington for one year” shock ripped across Richard’s face, his mouth opening like a wounded bird, Chloe gasped, Mia backed against the wall tears in her eyes, “Marry him” Richard repeated, disbelief and betrayal mingling in his tone, “To save us” Eleanor said, “He’ll clear the debts by morning”Richard’s hand trembled as he reached for his daughter, “You made this decision alone” he accused, pain flaring in his chest, Eleanor’s eyes burned with unshed tears, “I couldn’t bear to watch you lose everything” she pressed, her voice steady despite the storm inside, Chloe stepped forward, “He promised no intrusion into her life beyond public events” she said, drawing the contract from her bag and smoothing the leather cover, “Clause after clause they’re razor sharp but fair”Mia stared at the folder as if it were a bomb waiting to detonate, “Does he even care about us” she asked, voice small, Eleanor’s heart clenched, “He cares about the silver seal on his fortieth birthday” she explained, “Without that I lose everything my father built” Richard exhaled sharply, “A conditional marriage to satisfy a family tradition” he muttered, anger flashing in his eyes, Chloe’s jaw tightened, “It’s our only choice” she said, voice fierce, “He’s giving us life”At that moment the gallery door swung open and Samuel Price strode in, coat draped over one arm, expression unreadable, “Mr. Carrington wants a meeting” he announced, Chloe’s breath caught, Eleanor looked up, “Here” she asked, Samuel nodded, “In twenty minutes” he replied and strode back out, leaving them all stunnedThe clock ticked down and the walls seemed to narrow around them, Richard paced, Mia pressed her fingers to her lips, Chloe reread contract lines aloud, Eleanor’s chest tightened with anticipation and dread, the rumble of an approaching engine vibrated through the floor, Chloe grabbed Eleanor’s hand, “You ready” she whispered, Eleanor closed her eyes recalling Magnus’s scar, his promise to keep his word, the spark when their fingers brushed, “As ready as I’ll ever be” she said, her voice firmingThey walked through the gallery’s main hall together, framed paintings lining the walls like silent witnesses, each step a thunderclap in Eleanor’s chest, the grand oak doors swung open to reveal Magnus Carrington standing beneath the archway, coat perfectly tailored, hair immaculately styled, his face an unreadable mask, his gaze swept over the assembled group and settled on Eleanor, “Thank you for agreeing to this meeting” he said, voice cool but not unkind, Chloe bowed her head, Richard swallowed, Mia clutched Eleanor’s sideMagnus stepped forward closing the distance between them like a tide rolling in, “I trust you’ve all reviewed the contract” he inquired, Chloe pressed the folder forward, “Every clause” she confirmed, “I have questions” Richard said, voice tight, Magnus inclined his head, “I expected nothing less” he replied, “Father” Richard began, frustration and fear lacing each word, “My daughter’s life doesn’t revolve around your family’s traditions” Magnus’s eyes flickered with something—regret or resolve Eleanor couldn’t tell, “This union protects your gallery and secures my inheritance” he stated, as though stating a fact no one could argueMia’s voice broke the tension, “What do you want from me” she asked, stepping forward, boldness shining through her fear, Magnus’s gaze shifted to her, a small smile flickering at the corner of his mouth, “Nothing” he said softly, “You’re not party to this agreement” Mia’s shoulders slumped, relief and rejection mingling on her face, Eleanor’s heart ached at her sister’s hollow gratitude, Chloe placed a comforting hand on Mia’s shoulderMagnus turned back to Eleanor and his eyes softened, “I need you to stand with me publicly at tomorrow’s charity gala” he said, voice low, Eleanor nodded, breath warm in her chest, “I will” she answered, “Anything else” he asked, looping an arm around her waist, protectiveness seeping through the gesture, Eleanor felt the world narrow to his proximity, the brush of his coat against her arm, “Keep my family safe” she whispered, he nodded, “And I’ll see you through this year”A hush fell over the gallery as their vows, silent but potent, hung between them, Richard cleared his throat, “We expect prompt payment for the debts” he said, executing the ritual of business even amid personal upheaval, Magnus turned back to him, “All cleared by dawn” he promised, voice absolute, Chloe exhaled a shaky breath, Mia wiped her eyes, Eleanor’s heart thrummed with relief and a spark of something more daring—excitementBefore anyone spoke again the gallery lights flickered and the room plunged into sudden darkness, a fuse had blown somewhere and the hum of the city outside seemed to intensify, “Great timing” Chloe muttered, fumbling for her phone light, Eleanor’s palm touched Magnus’s arm instinctively, warmth pulsing through her fingers, “Stay close” he murmured, and she nodded, pressing against him as he guided her toward the exit, each step an unspoken promise that they faced this storm togetherAs they reached the reception desk, a voicemail notification chimed on Eleanor’s phone, Chloe snatched it up and played the message, a distorted male voice growling, “You think you can save her gallery and claim your silver seal without paying your debts to me” static crackled, “I’ve got your sister” the voice snarled, then the line went dead, chaos erupted as Chloe dropped the phone, terror etched on her face, “He said Viktor” she gasped, Eleanor’s stomach clenched, Magnus’s jaw tightened, he pulled her close, voice like steel, “He’ll regret that” and Eleanor realized this year-long contract was already a battlefield, every alliance was a weapon, every word a promise they’d need to fight for — and the war for their future had only just begun.
