The salesperson's eyes went wide when she saw the number on my screen. She looked from my phone to my wet clothes to my face, trying to make sense of it all. I could see the exact moment she decided I was for real.
"Right away, sir," she said, her tone completely different now. Respectful. Professional. The way she should have been treating customers all along.
Olivia's face went through about ten different colors. First confusion, then anger, then something that looked like fear.
"Willy, what is this? Did you steal money? Are you crazy?" Her voice had lost that cruel edge it had before. Now she sounded panicked.
"Steal?" I laughed. "No, Olivia. I didn't steal anything. I just finally got what I deserved. The universe gave me a gift, and now I'm using it. Don't you remember? You said I had no money, no future, no hope. Well, look at me now."
Joseph stepped forward, his face turning red with anger.
"Kid, I don't know what kind of game you're playing, but it won't work. That's probably fake money anyway. Credit card fraud, right? We should call the police on this loser!"
I turned to face him calmly. For the first time since I'd met this man, I wasn't afraid of him. In fact, I felt something I'd never felt before around him: power.
"Joseph, let me explain something to you. You can hit me if you want. You can call me names. You can try to hurt me. But the truth is, you're nothing compared to what I'm about to become. And one day, very soon, you're going to remember this moment. You're going to remember the day you met Willy Morgan, and you're going to regret ever putting your hands on me."
The salesperson was already starting to pack items into bags. Expensive Fendi bags filled with more expensive Fendi items. The price was going up and up, and with each item, I could see Olivia's mouth getting wider.
"This is impossible," Olivia whispered. "How much are you spending?"
"Does it matter?" I asked. "You said I had no money. You said I was a loser. Well, I'm proving you wrong right now. And the best part? I'm doing it in front of you."
The system pinged in my head again.
"Ding! Mission progress: Spend $150,000 of $300,000. Mission completion will unlock reward: Divine Blessing Ability!"
I had abilities? The system was giving me abilities? This was getting better and better. I focused on the handbag section and started pointing at every item.
"I'll take all of these. And these. And these too."
The salesperson was barely keeping up with me. Olivia was watching like someone watching a car crash. She couldn't look away, but she also couldn't believe what was happening.
Joseph grabbed her arm and tried to pull her away.
"Come on, let's go. This guy is insane. Let's just leave."
But Olivia pulled her arm back. She was staring at me with an expression I'd never seen before. It wasn't love, wasn't hate, but something in between. Confusion mixed with regret.
"Willy," she said slowly, "where did you get this money?"
I looked at her and smiled. Not a kind smile, but not a cruel one either. Just honest.
"That's not your problem anymore, Olivia. You made your choice. You chose him over me. You chose money and status and prestige. Well, now I have money too. But I'm not choosing you. I'm choosing myself. And that's the difference between us. You always choose based on what you can get. I'm going to choose based on what I can give. And I'm going to give to people who actually care about me."
I turned back to the salesperson.
"How much have we spent so far?"
"Two hundred and fifty-seven thousand, sir."
I pulled out my card again. Fifty thousand more to go. I started grabbing the most exclusive items, the limited edition pieces that probably hadn't been bought by more than a few people in the entire city.
When we finally stopped, the total was exactly three hundred thousand dollars.
The system pinged again.
"Ding! Mission complete! Revenge objective achieved! Reward: Divine Blessing Ability unlocked!"
A warm sensation spread through my body. It felt like being filled with golden light. When I looked at my reflection in the store's mirror, I looked the same on the outside, but something inside me had changed. I felt stronger. More confident. More alive.
Olivia was watching me with tears in her eyes now. Joseph was gone. I didn't even notice when he left. But Olivia was still there, staring at me like she was seeing me for the first time.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "Willy, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you... I didn't understand..."
I shook my head.
"No. You understood perfectly. You just didn't care. And that's okay. Because now I understand something too. I understand that I wasted three years on someone who never really loved me. But I also understand that I'm going to become someone amazing. Someone you'll wish you'd never let go. And you'll have to watch it from the outside."
The salesperson started organizing my purchase. She was calling for help to carry all the bags to my apartment, asking for my address, asking about delivery options.
I gave her all the information while Olivia watched in silence.
When I turned to leave, she called out my name.
"Willy, wait! Please, just give me a chance to explain. Just give me one more chance!"
I paused at the door and looked back at her. She was beautiful, just like she'd always been. But now I could see something else too. I could see the selfishness, the cruelty, the emptiness behind those beautiful eyes.
"No, Olivia," I said. "That chapter of my life is closed. And something tells me that my story is just beginning."
I walked out of the Fendi store with my head held high. The rain had stopped, and the sun was starting to break through the clouds. For the first time in three years, I felt like I could breathe.
My phone buzzed with a notification. A new mission had arrived.
What did this new mission say, and what does it mean for Willy Morgan's future?
