October 1864The New York Empiric THE MISSOURI GUERRILLAS STRIKE — * — The Heartless Butcheries of Howell A Guerrilla Shows Mercy Information received confirms that the notorious Arthur “Bub” Howell attacked the town of Concord, Missouri, yesterday, captured an entire train, set fire to a number of buildings, and murdered seven unarmed civilians. Howell and his band, numbering some seventy-five bushwhackers, all dressed in Union coats, descended on the unsuspecting town at about eleven o’clock in the morning. The church bells rang out their warnings, but too late, for the vermin had already infested the once clean and peaceful streets.
