This morning, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Jesse Woodson James, the notorious bandit and train robber, was shot and killed by Charles and Robert Ford, special detectives in the employ of the governor and the chief of police.
Once the news began to circulate, crowds of people rushed to the little white house on Lafayette St. where the shooting occurred. At first, no one could believe that Jesse was dead, but when this was proven beyond doubt, the officers present had to fight back the mob to keep the house from being stripped for souvenirs.
Statements ascertained from Jesse’s wife and the Ford brothers indicate that the James family moved to St.
