Summer 1878Joe “Pony” Sawyer Outlaw and Informer Excerpt from His Confession Deposition taken by P. D. Haeffy, Police Commissioner, Kansas City, Mo., this twenty-ninth day of March, 1882. Haeffy: Well, Joe, lets start with your name and particulars. Sawyer: You know my name. Haeffy: Yes, but this is a formal statement. Give us your full name, date of birth and so on. Sawyer: I was born on August 21,1855 near Keatsville in Clay County. My parents named me Charles Joseph Sawyer Jr., but it got confusing since my father’s name was also Charles, so they started calling me Joe. Haeffy: Very good. We’re learning things already. Now, begin at the beginning and leave nothing out. Sawyer: Should I start with Jess? Haeffy: Yes, I should say Frank and Jesse are ones we’re interested in.
