CHAPTER 7:THE ABYSS REBOOTS

824 Words
POV: CAPTAIN ELIAS VANCE ㅤ Gravity was the first thing to lie to us. As the Phosphorus flare descended into the black pit, the light didn't reveal a floor; it revealed a sea of reaching, skeletal hands. We weren't falling. We were being pulled. ㅤ "Brace for impact!" I roared, grabbing Jace’s tactical harness as the remnants of the illusory helicopter dissolved into ash. ㅤ Instead of a bone-shattering crash, we hit a surface that felt like cold, viscous oil. It was the "Morgue" the Director spoke of—a vast, subterranean chamber filled with silver-lined body bags that hung from the ceiling like cocoons. The air here was so thick with the smell of formaldehyde, it felt like swallowing needles. ㅤ [ Bravo: Cap... I can’t... I can’t see my hands! ] ㅤ Bravo’s voice was distorted, sounding like it was being played through a broken record. I clicked my tactical light to maximum intensity. The beam struggled against the supernatural gloom, illuminating Bravo standing a few feet away. But his shadow on the wall wasn't moving when he moved. It remained still, watching us. ㅤ "Jace, status report. Now!" I hissed, checking the chamber of my rifle. ㅤ [ Jace: My... my sensors are reading 'Null'. Cap, we aren't in the asylum anymore. We’re in the sub-layer. The 'Hellgate' is fully open. ] ㅤ Suddenly, the hanging body bags began to twitch. A low, wet tearing sound echoed through the morgue. One by one, the silver fabric split open, and figures began to slide out—not humans, but "The Hollowed." They were pale, skinless entities with tactical gear fused into their flesh. They were the Breachers who had failed in the past. ㅤ "Contacts! Six o'clock! Twelve o'clock! They’re everywhere!" Bravo yelled, his shotgun barking in the dark. ㅤ BOOM. BOOM. ㅤ The salt-spray rounds shredded the first wave, but more were emerging from the shadows. These weren't simple ghosts; they were echoes of our own training. They moved with military precision, flanking us in the dark. ㅤ "Formation: Iron Cross!" I commanded. "Don't let them split us up!" ㅤ I fired a burst of Mercury rounds at a Hollowed that tried to breach our left flank. The silver bullet ignited upon impact, cauterizing the entity’s chest, but it didn't stop. It had no nervous system to shock, no heart to stop. It only had a directive: Consume. ㅤ "They’re learning our patterns!" Jace shouted, fumbling with a backup localized EMP device. "Cap, the Director is using the building’s mainframe to predict our movements!" ㅤ From the darkness above, the Director’s laughter echoed—a cold, digital sound that vibrated in my teeth. ㅤ “Evolution, Elias. Even a soldier must adapt or become a specimen. You are currently... obsolete.” ㅤ "I’ve got a 'reboot' for you right here!" I yelled, pulling a specialized Mercury-Thermite grenade from my vest. ㅤ This was a prototype—a one-of-a-kind weapon designed for "Zone Collapse" scenarios. I didn't throw it at the Hollowed. I looked at the floor—the black, oily surface that was feeding the Director his power. ㅤ "Bravo, Jace! Jump on three!" ㅤ [ Bravo: Jump where? Into the pit?! ] ㅤ "Just do it! One... two... THREE!" ㅤ I slammed the grenade into the floor and triggered the manual override. ㅤ FWOOOOOM! ㅤ A pillar of silver-white fire erupted, not expanding outward, but burning downward. The Mercury-Thermite didn't just burn; it erased the digital-paranormal code of the floor. For a split second, the morgue flickered. The body bags vanished. The Hollowed turned into pillars of salt. ㅤ We fell through the hole in reality, the world turning into a blur of grey static and white heat. My ears were ringing, my vision tunneling into a single point of light. ㅤ Thud. ㅤ We hit solid concrete. Hard. ㅤ I gasped for air, the smell of formaldehyde gone, replaced by the scent of dust and old rain. I looked up. We were back in the main lobby of the asylum. But it was different. It was morning. Real sunlight was streaming through the broken windows, hitting the floorboards where we lay. ㅤ "Did... did we make it?" Bravo groaned, clutching his ribs. ㅤ I checked my watch. 06:00 AM. The compass was pointing North. The EMF meter was silent. ㅤ "I think so," I whispered, helping Jace up. ㅤ But as I looked at the grand staircase, I saw a single, silver-lined body bag sitting on the landing. It was empty. And pinned to the door was a surgical note, written in fresh, black blood: ㅤ "PATIENT: ELIAS VANCE. STATUS: UNDER OBSERVATION. NEXT SURGERY: SCHEDULED." ㅤ The extraction chopper's actual sound finally echoed from outside. The real one this time. But as I stepped toward the light, I realized my shadow was still missing. ㅤ The Director hadn't lost. He had just finished the first phase of the operation.
