Chapter 7 FREYA'S POV With the tracker now sitting in my hand, I realized that I was in more danger than I thought I was. I could even feel my wolf senses stir through the restraint, warning me of the danger to come. "We have to leave," I told Finnley and hurried to my room to quickly grab whatever I could. If they had been tracking him down, it meant they were not so far away now, and I could not risk getting Doctor Carver tied up in my mess. I had no idea what they would want with me or Finnley, but one thing was sure, it could not be good. The wolves banished me. Why are they coming after me as if I stole something before leaving? Why can't they all let me be? Not knowing how far or how close they were only made my heart beat even faster. They could be at the door in minutes, seconds perhaps. I threw a few clothes into a small bag, took the clinic keys and some cash I had saved, thrust them in my pocket and walked out of the room. "Come on," I said to Finnley. "Freya, I'm so sorry, I had no idea they... they..." "It's alright," I cut him off immediately. "There's no need to apologize now. I'm going to lead us to somewhere I hope will be safer to stay but we need to be on the lookout, okay?" Finnley responded with a brave nod and I grabbed his shirt from the floor. "Follow me and stay close," I whispered while opening the door. I cracked the door open a little, checking for any suspicious noise or movement before widening it to pass through. We slipped out, quickly but quietly and hurried to the other side of the street. I gave him a signal to wait at a spot while I ran to the end of the street. I tossed the old shirt into a trash can and crushed the tracker on the floor with my right shoe before picking up the pieces and tossing them into the can as well. Wiping my hands clean, I started back towards Finnley while glancing around the empty street. If Damon's scouts wanted to attack, this would be the perfect time for them to do so, and I did not want to be caught off guard. "You okay?" I asked Finnley when I returned to his side and he nodded. "We'll keep to the shadows as we move," I told him and just as I took a step forward, a car swerved into the street. Reflexively, I pulled him into a side alley and we both crouched to the floor, watching the car stop just in front of my building. My breath caught in my throat as two men stepped out and made their way to my door. Beside me, I noticed Finnley stand to his feet with the claws of his right hand outstretched. "What do you think you're doing?" I snapped in a quiet voice, immediately grabbing his arm to keep him from moving a step. "I can get them now while they're distracted." "What? No!" I hissed, wondering what the hell must have been running through his head to make such a silly decision. "They won't see me coming," he insisted but I shook my head and pulled him down. I was not going to risk his life or mine so carelessly. Besides, the smell of piss and dirt from the alley was already beginning to make me feel nauseous. The men knocked on the front door and waited for a response. When there was none, they looked through the window and began to speak to themselves. The sky cracked above us and it began to drizzle lightly. "What if we never saw the tracker when we did?" Finnley asked beside me but I could not even find the words to answer. "We need to keep moving," I said instead with my eyes still on the men. I couldn't tell if they were thinking of breaking into the house but they still seemed to be talking to each other. My heart hammered in my chest. I could not take the risk of following the street even though it was dark and the shortest route to Elena's apartment. Any wolf would easily spot us in the darkness. "We'll have to take the long route," I whispered and turned to walk down the alley. But as Finnley turned to follow me, his boots crushed the dried leaves scattered around the alley and, in the night, the sound seemed to echo. "Run!" I whispered to him and took off. The drizzling had increased now and as I ran, the drops seemed to slap against my face. Nearly every second, I spun around to make sure he was following behind. Thankfully, I couldn't see anyone following behind him. As soon as I sighted Elena's building, a sigh escaped my lips. My clothes were now soaked, and goosebumps covered my cold skin. I rapped on Elena's door as I reached it and leaned against it to shield myself as much as possible from the rain that had now gotten heavy. "Come on, Elena," I pleaded desperately as I knocked again, louder this time. It must have been extremely early in the morning, and although I hated that I was about to interrupt her much-needed sleep after the long day at the clinic, this was a life-or-death situation. Finnley finally came up to me, breathing heavily as well. "Someone's following," he managed to exhale through ragged breaths, and my head spun around. I could see the silhouette of a man walking in our direction. There was no rush in his steps, but it made my heart jump. "Please, Elena," a hot tear slipped down my cheek as I raised my hand to knock again.
