Chapter 15
FREYA'S POV
As I walked down the corridors of the isolation wing, I could literally feel the cold hands of fear gripping me on every side. My breaths came out in shallow puffs until my mouth and throat went dry.
Alpha Gideon's room was at the end of the narrow hallway but it felt like I was still five miles away. Every step I took closer to it felt heavier than the last.
I was only just few a feet away from the door when I felt it. Heat.
My chest tightened in a way that felt unfamiliar, and I felt a strange pull as I continued to move.
I stood by the door and forced a deep breath. From here, I could only see the outline of the Alpha, lying still on the bed.
I looked around to make sure there was no one in the hallway and then I slipped into the room, closing the door behind me.
It felt like I had suddenly trapped myself in a heated room. Blood rushed through my veins and my chest rose and fell as I breathed hard.
I took a step towards the bed but he stirred and mumbled something, making me suck in a gasp.
What if this was all wrong and he did not want me here?
I closed my eyes briefly and remembered Doctor Carver's words.
None of us knew if it would work, but the more time we wasted, the more the poison killed him.
I clenched my jaw in determination and moved towards the bed, giving myself a perfect view of the Alpha for the first time ever.
The illness had left him looking pale but it was still obvious how handsome this man was. His dark hair was slightly ruffled because he had stayen in bed for a long time and I noticed the dark freckles spotting his neck, even down to his chest.
His wavy chest hair came into view and I quickly looked away, realizing I was crossing a line.
I steadied myself and cleared my throat, reminding myself I was here for one thing only. The rare gift of healing had been given to me and I had to serve my Alpha with it.
Former Alpha, a voice reminded me. I was still a banished Omega.
Blowing out a breath, I turned back to him and gently placed my hand on his forearm, ignoring how my blood rushed crazily as our skin made contact.
It did not take up to a second before the healing energy rushed through me, faster than it ever had.
He stirred beneath me and his eyes fluttered restlessly, although they remained closed.
I felt the healing energy flow from every single part of my body and noticed some color gradually return to his face.
When I finally pulled away, he let out a soft, satisfied breath, like a man who had yearned desperately for water and finally got it.
I stood there, watching his handsome face, unsure what I was waiting for.
That was a lie. I knew what I was waiting for. Finnley had heard him mention my name, Julian too. If he would say it this time, with just me present, it would kill every doubt I had left.
But there was nothing. He just lay still, peacefully and i began to wonder what would happen if he got to know that he, an incomparable, powerful Alpha, had been helped by a weak, pitiful Omega banished for tarnishing the reputation of her family.
He would probably hate me after learning of my crime and I knew my fragile heart would not be able to bear the humiliation if that eventually happened.
Without thinking, I ran the tips of my fingers down his large forearm to his palm. My hand was small compared to his.
I rested my fingers against his, maybe trying to see if they fit perfectly together, but then his fingers moved, almost interlocking with mine and I pulled away quickly.
My heart pounded in my chest as I watched his fingers flex, as though they wanted to feel the touch again, but I had overstayed my welcome.
I turned and hurried out of the room, following the same way I came until I was out of the back door.
Julian spotted me immediately and he rushed to me, his brows raised curiously.
"He's better now," I said and noticed his shoulders relax slightly.
"But I think this one time will not be enough. The poison is fast-acting and I won't be able to heal him completely at once without going unconscious."
Julian's jaw ticked as he thought about it.
"We'll find a way, come on," he responded confidently, turning to walk down the passage back home.
We had barely taken a step around the corner when a guard suddenly appeared in front of us.
I gasped while Julian reached for something at his back.
The female walking behind him was unmistakable.
My fists reflexively tightened as Cassandra walked towards us, her hands elegantly folded in front of her and a cold smile plastered on her face.
"No reason to be in a rush now, is there?" She asked and patted the guard lightly for him to leave.
"I doubt there is," the words came out before I could think of it, and even Julian glanced in my direction, probably surprised that I had spoken.
"Freya, my dear sister, you look sick and tired. You're welcome to rest for a while."
I wasn't sure if she was putting up an act for Julian or she was being deliberately calm despite seeing me, but fury swirled in my stomach.
She was the reason I found myself in all this mess in the first place.
And so, saying nothing, I brushed past her and walked off, confident that Julian would come to my rescue if she tried anything.
But she didn't, and soon, I heard Julian's heavy footsteps following me behind.
My brows pushed together in confusion.
Had Cassandra really just let me go freely??
