Chapter 13: Preparations II

791 Words
Leia's POV She nervously paced in my head, her own faith faltering. She looked so sad that I wished I could hug her. Maybe everything he said that day was just… a moment. A brief lapse that had already passed. My throat tightened at the thought. I stood up slowly and moved toward the window, my gaze drifting over the pack grounds below. The event wing was lit even at that hour, movement visible behind the tall windows. There clearly were preparations for something huge. Something that everyone seemed to know about… except me. A quiet knock sounded at my door. I turned slightly. “Come in.” One of the younger maids stepped inside, her expression hesitant. “Luna Leia, Alpha Pete is asking for you.” My heart skipped, though I quickly steadied myself. “I will be there shortly.” She nodded and left. For a moment, I remained where I was, gathering myself. My mind ran in circles, wondering why he seemed to hate coming to his own chambers, that he would rather summon me somewhere else. Anyway, I let myself go and hear what he wanted to say this time. I stood by the mirror, inspecting my appearance before appearing before my Alpha mate. I looked haggard. Tired. Malnourished. I have hardly eaten lately. I had no appetite. I straightened my shoulders and made my way out. He wasn’t in his room. He could only be in his office, so I headed there. He was indeed was. He looked up as I entered, his expression unreadable at first before softening slightly. “Leia,” he said. Besides missing my mate, I missed my friend. The one I used to freely talk to without fearing Alpha commands. I stopped a few steps from his desk, studying him carefully. There were so many things I wanted to ask, but only one question truly mattered. “What is going on?” I asked quietly. His brows drew together slightly. “What do you mean?” “All the preparations,” I continued. “The decorators, the deliveries, the people coming in and out. And Sharon… she seems to be overseeing everything.” I paused, searching his face. “Is there something happening that I should know about? And what about my birthday… are we still celebrating it?” Honestly, I would be more than content even if it was just me and him. For a moment, he did not answer. Then he leaned back slightly in his chair, his expression easing. “You do not need to worry about that. I have it all covered.” The words settled heavily in my chest. “I am not worried,” I said, though my voice betrayed me slightly. “I just… want to understand.” He studied me for a moment longer before speaking again. “Everything is under control, Leia. All you need to do is relax and wait for your day.” Under control. He did not explain any further, and that was what unsettled me. “You will have a wonderful celebration. You will only need to look pretty, and you will see what I prepared,” he added. My heart gave a small, uncertain pull at those words. A celebration? So was it about my birthday? “Then why…” I hesitated. “Why does it feel like I am not part of it?” The question slipped out before I could stop it. Silence followed. Pete’s gaze shifted briefly, as if weighing his response. “You are overthinking things,” he said finally. “I told you I would take care of it.” I searched his eyes, looking for something solid to hold onto. Something more assuring. But all I found was reassurance that felt distant, polished and carefully given. “Trust me,” he added. The words should have comforted me like they used to. But now… they feel unfamiliar. I nodded slowly anyway. “Alright.” There was nothing else to say. Nothing he was willing to say. I turned to leave, but paused at the door. “Pete…” He looked up again. “I hope you are right,” I said softly. Because I was no longer sure if I could afford to believe in something that might not be there. Drakah warned me. I left before he could respond. The hallway felt colder than before as I walked back to my room. Behind me, the preparations continued. They were larger, louder and more elaborate with each passing hour. And I remained exactly where I had been all along. A Luna in waiting. I did not want false hope… but I still prayed that this would be real this time.
