Leia’s POV
The drive to town was uneventful. My mind was all over and my heart was beginning to really have hope but also doubt. I was having small episodes of joy, which made me smile unaware and also frowned whenever I felt like I may be giving myself hope too soon. I really didn't know how to feel.
The fact that he could remember my birthday, which I had forgotten with all the turmoil my heart was going through, made me have a little hope in our bond. Maybe there was a reason for all his behavior. Perhaps he pretended to mistreat me just to make Sharon think he was leaning towards her? Maybe he really regretted the way he treated me and wanted to make it up to me? I asked myself these questions. Deep down I wanted it to be so, but I also didn't want to give myself false hope.
Even though my hope was gathering, there was also that still small voice at the back of my consciousness that was telling me not to let my guard down. I wanted to totally ignore it, but I couldn’t. So I decided to revel in today’s harmony and not spoil the mood.
I went to the bakery we used to go to with Luna Eleanor, Pete’s mother, when we were little. It had the best pastries ever back then. I ordered a custom-made vanilla cake for my birthday and asked them to write my name on it. I paid fully and took the receipt. They told me to pick it the morning of my birthday.
I shopped around, got myself some jewelry and shoes. I walked into a popular boutique and looked through the most beautiful dinner dresses in the shop. I went through the long isles taking my time when I suddenly spotted a very beautiful dress.
My hand reached out to it when another hand moved swiftly to snatch it. Surprised by who that could be, I couldn't believe my eyes when they finally fell on her. Her usual smirk plucked to her lips, she mockingly said, “This is how I’ll snatch everything from you!”
I didn’t know whether to say something to her or just ignore her, but anger rose in my heart. This was the woman who constantly denied me the attention of my mate by selfishly hoarding his time.
“Showing our true colors now that Pete isn't here now, are we?” I said, deliberately riling her. Her facial expression said she was feeling exactly how I wanted her to.
“Oh! Now you are smug, huh? Let me tell you, I will show you how I'll surely snatch him from you and there's nothing you won't do about it. Keep your smugness and watch how I skillfully take him away, fated or not,” she said.
I could see so much anger from the way her pupils contracted. With this much determination, I knew I was still going to see more of her action. A little hope in me told me Pete wouldn't let her, that he had come back to his senses.
I didn't know what to think. I wondered if this woman would go to any length to get what she wanted. Clearly, she wanted power and people who wanted power would go to any length.
Would she use black magic to force Pete to reject me or was she only going to continue using the tactics she had been using? I wanted to probe her more so I could see how far she was willing to go to get what she wanted.
“Clearly you didn't have a fated bond with your late mate, I can see. Tell me, ever heard that you couldn't bypass a mate bond? Especially that of an Alpha. Do you think, just because he has been taking pity on you all this while, then he would let you manipulate him into being your lover or to reject me, his goddess-given mate? Do you even know where we both come from and how deep our bond is?” I boldly said. I prayed to the goddess to never let things get to that part of rejection.
Now I haven't been a very brave person in my life, though I was a daughter of a warrior, and I've never been forced to stand up for myself like this in the past, but I felt like enough disrespect was enough.
She hesitated a bit and squinted. I guess she had always thought of me as a weak wolf that could be a pushover.
She sneered. “Clearly, you are the one who doesn't know me and the length I can go to get what I want. Then watch me and see!” She said as she was about to walk off to the point of sale with the dress in her hands.
“I know that power-hungry people are very dangerous and can do anything. Planning to eliminate me or are you going to use dark magic to make him yours? So would you even do the forbidden just for power? How shameful can one go?” I probed. I wanted to see her motive. Perhaps I could ask for help from Drakah if I had a hint of what she would do.
She stopped and turned around. She came even closer. I could see the color of her eyes changing as if her wolf would show up at any time and that scared me. We were in human territory, and it would be ugly if they discovered our species just because of a feud caused by bickering over a man.
I instinctively took a step back, not because I was afraid of fighting her, but because I didn't want such confrontation in this kind of environment. Before I could process it, a slap fell on my cheek, leaving a tingling sensation on my face. It really stung.
‘Did she just slap me?’ I was dumbfounded. Did it even escalate to fighting? Was it because I said the truth? A few seconds of disbelief passed, and I sneered at her while rubbing my cheek.
“I guess I just touched the right nerve for you to suddenly lose it, huh? Sharon, you know very well that black magic has been banned from our Kingdom and if you plan on using it, then you should be ready for the consequences of King Tate's judgment! Interaction with witches and wizards is not allowed unless you are a witch yourself…”
Before I could finish my sentence, her hand was raised and another hot slap landed on me. Her hand was raised again, ready to give me the third slap, but I swiftly blocked it. Though I blocked it and I guess she wasn't expecting me to, I still staggered back.
She might have mistaken that for being weak because she began to gall me. “Just a weak omega thinking she could compete with me, a beta!” She sneered and walked away. I decided to let her be and find another dress. At least I got to see what kind of person she was, and I would know how to deal with her in the future.
After paying for my dress, I went to a*****e where I bought all the decorations and everything needed for a party.
I got home to find Sharon already at home, with a swollen cheek, and apparently I was the doer of the deed. The expression on Pete's face said it all.
