Chapter Eight THE WALL Down! Now! Huldar threw his arm over Andel’s back. The envelope bucked with unprecedented violence. The Uri’madu hit the floor, but many of the Host seemed shocked beyond reaction. Around them, the voices of all seven spinners and their navigator raged in deafening, desperate harmony. “Wasn’t this bad last time!” Tam muttered. Huldar shook his head and wished him to silence. It was imperative nothing interrupt the delicate contract between sound and matter – all that kept them from the bitter dark of the Chime. A block of cargo slipped its bonds, careened across the envelope and smashed into a knot of miners. Injured and terrified, their cries caused a section of wall to rip. Stars flashed as the fissure spread. One slid back and dangled like a kite in the dark.
