Bella's POV
It's been two months since the incident and things have not been easy. We had to move to this place where everyone knows each other village to avoid being found out by the people who murdered my family in cold blood. Sometimes, I just can't help but think if they're the only ones after us. We might be chased by more people than we think.
I had no friends back at home, so there was no one to miss. Even though I am glad that my nanny survived, I can't help but think that everything happened because of me. Which is correct because if I had been contended, I would still have my family with me and I wouldn't be living in this small village starting life afresh.
" Mel!! There you are, I have been looking for you like for the past hour". My nanny Lane shouted happily.
Oh I forgot to mention that we had to change our story when we got here. It was my nanny Clara's idea, not mine. She said, in that way, we would think of being dead and it would be easier to start a new life. When we got here, I changed my name to Melanie Bertha Sherlock, which was not a complete lie, since Bertha was my middle name and Sherlock was my grandfather's name. Nanny Clara chose to go by the name Bessie Sherlock. She said she had always wanted to go by that name, so she is happy with the name I guess. And she's my mother. Weird I know, right? But it had to be that way to avoid questions from nosy villagers.
" Mel, today is the ball you have to prepare and I know you haven't picked up a dress yet, but no worries, I am here. I picked a dress I know you will like, so go change up and appear pretty". My nanny Clara handed me a bag. She seemed so happy like nothing happened two months ago, as this has always been our way of life. Like we aren't living a lie. Like we don't have a mafia boss chasing every nook and cranny for us.
" Yay I'm so excited to attend this ball. I am so so glad because this is the way I have been". I replied to her drily as I took the bag from her, but the second I looked at her face, I regretted my words instantly.
" Do you think you're the only one fighting to forget what happened two months ago? That night, I lost my job, I lost a family who took care of my education from my middle school to college and I also lost my children that same night, so don't think you're the only one going through hell. Do you think I have ever dreamed of settling down in a village with low civilization? Do you think I am so happy? If you care to know Bella, that day it happened was Cathy's birthday and my anniversary. I lost my daughter and husband on the day I was meant to be celebrating with them. Do you think it's not hard on me too? If you don't want to go to the ball, then don't try salting fresh wounds". With tears in her eyes, she stomped to her room to probably cry her eyes out.
And now I feel like an ungrateful person. She lost her family because of my family and the least i could do was to help her forget everything and start over again, but here I was being ungrateful about it.
I groaned as I thought of many ways to apologize and make it up to her.
" Mel B there you are. Why aren't you dressed have you forgotten? We have to be there at the castle this evening for the ball". Evie screamed. She is the only friend I have since we moved here and has not stopped calling me that ridiculous name. She said it was a pet name she figured out for me.
" Uhm stop freaking out Evie, I just have to dress up. Mommy already got me a dress". I stood up as I made my way to my room, which was not half the size of my parents' kitchen. Evie trailed behind me as she filled my ears with the things going on in her school. I refused to go be admitted to school when we got here and now I feel so stupid.
" Wow, your mother sure knows what's best for you. She chose the best dress for her. I wish my mother cared I exist". She commented as I dressed up in that fancy but not too fancy dress, making me feel very bad at the way I treated my nanny Lane.
" I'm sorry about your mother. Don't worry, she will come around".
" Yeah right you look so gorgeous right now and let me do a few things to your hair and your face and you will, all set". She said as she stood up from my little bed and moved to my dressing table, gesturing for me to sit down and let her perform her magic. Evie being Evie, took out her makeup purse. She always carries that purse alongside her, always being prepared.
For the next few hours, I sat still even though my butt was screaming so loudly for me to stop stressing about it. I knew better than to complain as I let Evie do her magic.
" Now we're done here, I kept your makeup as natural as you would want it to be to bring out your natural face. I hope I was half as cute as you are and perhaps things wouldn't be so rough with my mother, but nevertheless, I am grateful I am not ugly".
" Evie...I am sorry about..."
" Uh no no no, you can't talk yet unless you want us to start from scratch again". I kinda knew she would cut me. She always hated being pitied, which was what I was doing right now.
" And now we are done you can stare at your reflection and tell me what you see darling".
" Oh my God! Evie... what have you done to my face!!"
" You're welcome and it's not me, you're just a natural goddess who just needed a little touch of a fairy godmother's wand to remind her of so darling ".
I stood starstruck at my reflection. I look so gorgeous that I can hardly recognize myself. I turned and smiled gratefully at her.
" Uhm Evie, I need to speak to my na uhm mother first, then we can go together, okay?"
" No problem, I will be waiting for you downstairs".
I breathed in as I tapped my nanny Lane's room. I opened the door and here she was on her bed, probably still feeling bad.
" Uhm I just want to say that I am so sorry for the way I have been for the past two months. What happened was my fault. Nanny, you lost your family because of me and I have been so ungrateful and I am so sorry can we start over again?".
" Oh dear come here. It wasn't your fault dear. You did what any normal teenager would have done. It just happened to be a bad time". For the next ten minutes, we sat in each other's arms crying our eyes out until I remembered Evie and the ball.
" Nanny, I have to go now. Evie is waiting for me downstairs and I don't want her to get angry with me. You know how she is when she gets mad at me for wasting her time".
" Okay you girls, enjoy yourselves and be back before 10. I will be awake waiting for you". And with that, she kissed my head and bade me goodbye.
" Oh my gosh Melanie, what did you do?!!". Evie screamed like a mentally deranged person. Immediately, she raised her eyes from her phone. Uh oh she called my name, which means that she is extremely mad at me.
" Oh my f***ing ruined my hard work. What in the name of Lucifer did you f***ing do to your face, Melanie Bertha Sherlock!!!!". She thundered and I could feel the house shake in her voice too.
" Oh my goodness are you girls still here? The ball is going to start in thirty minutes with or without you two, so get going and before you go, I want you to taste the cookies I made. They're chocolate flavours and, dear Evie, we don't swear here". Nanny Lane came to my rescue. Chocolate cookies were Evie's favorite and I'm glad nanny Clara prepared them.
" Oh my God! Bessie, your magic cookies are always the best.
