“An arrogant stranger is just a lesson wrapped in a challenge; how you respond reveals more about you than them.”
**scarlet pov**
The first day at a new school is supposed to be nerve-wracking, but I’d say mine took the cake. Walking down the crowded hallway of Blue Ridge High, I felt out of place—like a puzzle piece from a different box.
The school was buzzing with chatter, laughter, and the occasional slamming of locker doors. I tried to blend in, keeping my eyes on the ground and my thoughts anywhere but here.
But then it happened. I collided with what I first thought was a wall, but a wall doesn’t talk.
“Watch where you're going... buttercup.” The voice was deep, commanding, and annoyingly smug.
I blinked, slowly raising my eyes to meet the source of the voice. Standing before me was a guy who looked like he’d stepped out of a magazine cover. He was tall—so tall I had to tilt my head back just to see his face—and built like an athlete. His hair was dark and tousled in that effortless way that probably took a lot of effort, and his eyes were sharp, assessing me like I was the one who needed to explain myself.
Oh, and did I mention he called me buttercup? Yeah, that definitely made the embarrassment pool in my cheeks. I glanced down at my crop top, realizing that was the nickname’s origin, and felt my face heat up even more.
For a second, I almost let it slide. Almost. But something about his arrogant smirk, the way he looked down at me like I was some kind of amusing distraction, sparked something inside me. I wasn’t about to let this guy have the upper hand.
“Well, I think you should watch where you’re going,” I snapped back, my voice sharper than I intended.
He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused.
“You walked into me, buttercup. Now say sorry, and I’ll let you go. Trust me, you don’t want to mess with me, sweetheart.”
He leaned in slightly, his eyes locking onto mine. There was something dangerous in them, something that sent a shiver down my spine, but I wasn’t about to back down now. I squared my shoulders and looked up at him, determined not to be intimidated by this walking, talking Eiffel Tower.
“I’m not going to say sorry to an arrogant ass like you,” I shot back, my heart pounding in my chest.
I turned on my heel and started to walk away, hoping to escape before he could respond.
But before I could take more than a few steps, I felt a hand grip my arm. I was spun around and shoved against the nearest wall, his tall frame towering over me. The hallway seemed to go quiet as if the universe itself was holding its breath.
“What did you just say to me?” His voice was low, laced with something that sounded like a challenge.
I met his gaze, my breath catching in my throat. Up close, his eyes were even more intense, dark pools that seemed to hold a thousand secrets. But I refused to let him see how rattled I was.
“You heard me,” I whispered, my voice somehow steady despite the fact that my heart was trying to break free from my chest.
For a moment, we just stood there, locked in a silent battle of wills. Then, to my surprise, he released his grip and took a step back, his expression unreadable.
“You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that, but don't mess with me” he said, his tone almost begrudging.
He gave me one last look, something unreadable flickering in his eyes, before turning and walking away, disappearing into the crowd of students like he hadn’t just rattled my world.
I let out a shaky breath, my hands trembling slightly as I pushed away from the wall. What the hell just happened? I’d been in plenty of scrapes before, but nothing like this. There was something about him that got under my skin, something that made me both furious and... curious.
But I wasn’t going to let him get to me. Not now, not ever. I was here to survive high school, not to get involved with some arrogant jerk who thought he owned the place.
As I walked away, trying to regain my composure, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much more complicated than I was ready for.
