59 Vic was always blasé when Tom returned from a trip. He couldn’t decide whether this time Vic knew he had been unfaithful through female intuition or if his guilt was making him misinterpret her behaviour. It was usual for her to be somewhat preoccupied, more interested in listing all she had done in his absence than asking him about his trip. He suspected it was because, like every woman he had ever known, she kept a dialogue going with him when he was away, wanting to, or perhaps needing to, alert him to all the various occurrences during the day; intimacy built through routine, like most relationships.
