Chapter 16

Joy’s POV Staring at the necklace, I was too shocked to say anything. “Your mom must give this to you for a reason.”Ryan theorized, “Maybe she is trying to protect you from your mate.” “But why is she doing that? I thought having a mate is a bless.”I cited what mom’s divorce lawyer said. “It is a bless for werewolves. Not necessarily for a human.”Ryan shook his head and looked at me with sorrow in his eyes. After a moment of hesitation, he breathed the truth to me, “Human beings are generally weaker than werewolves because they don’t have a wolf and it would be impossible for them to shift into wolves.” “So what?”I frowned, feeling a a bit uncomfortable. “I hold no discrimination towards human beings.”Ryan observed my face and carefully explained, “I am just stating a fact.”He paused for a while to see my reaction before he continued, “Let’s say you’re mated to a werewolf who happened to be brutal. You don’t stand a chance to fight against him.” “What if I call 911?”I asked, “I could seek help from police officer.” “Then you’ll probably end up being sending to asylum and receive medical treatment there.”Ryan said, “No one is gonna believe you because you couldn’t prove your point. People tend to react like how you reacted when I told you I am a werewolf.” I shuddered at the thought but not ready to give up.“What if I record the conversation?” “Your mate could argue he is merely joking by saying he is a werewolf.” “Well, then I could record his shifting process.” “Then he will kill you before the tape is sent to the police department.” I widened my eyes and shouted, “But I am his mate!” “Compared to the safety of his pack, a human mate means nothing to an Alpha because it is difficult for him to reorganize a pack but it is convenient to find an obedient human to replace the dead one.”Ryan said, “You know human beings better than me. It is quite easy to corrupt their heart. Either threatening or tempting can work well and the combination of the two can often produce better effect. ” “You seemed to be very familiar with this procedure.”I squinted my eyes and asked Ryan, “Have you been planning to use such strategies to deal with your human mate?” “What? No.”Ryan shook his head and said, “I didn’t know my mate is a human until today.”He looked genuinely sincere and I believed he was telling the truth. I nodded and Ryan further explained, “I knew such stuff because I am a future Alpha. We’re taught to protect the benefits of our pack at all cost.” “At all cost?”I raised my eyebrows at him, “What if your mate is a werewolf rather than a human being? Will the wolf also be executed for bringing troubles to the pack?” “No.”Ryan replied honestly. “What punishment will she have then?” “It depends on her rank in the pack. If she comes from an omega family, she will either be kicked out and became a rogue or be kept as a s*x slave for the whole pack.” “A what?!”I asked in terror. “You heard me.”Instead of repeating himself, Ryan coughed and continued to introduce other cases, “If she happens to be a Beta’s daughter, she can have a second chance. A ceremony will be held and she needs to ask for forgiveness and pledge her loyalty to the pack.” “Then she will be forgiven?” “Yes. But if she causes trouble again, whoever presented on the ceremony and witnessed her vow has the right to end her life. In fact things like this always happen.”Ryan said, “Many she-wolves are eager to be the Luna of the pack and they would be happy to get rid of the Alpha’s original mate.” “What about an Alpha’s daughter? Will she be punished too?” “That seldom happen.”Ryan said, “A bond between two Alpha’s children is usually seen as a bridge to link two packs. To maintain the alliance, an Alpha’s daughter won’t be blamed as long as her family has her back.” “That’s so unfair.”I frowned. “Welcome to the world of werewolves.”Ryan shrugged and concluded, “This could be the reason why your mom put that descenter on your. She wanted to protect you from werewolves. I don’t like your mom but I have to admit she is a considerate woman. The trick she played works.” I suddenly understood the words my mom had said. She mentioned that she didn’t want to expose me to danger and she was trying to protect me…I felt so guilty that I didn’t believe my mom’s explanations and regarded it as excuse. “Hey, you will be alright, Okay? You should feel lucky that you are mated to me rather than other Alphas.”Ryan gave me a smile to cheer me up. He has a fair point but it didn’t fully alleviate my anxiety. Yes, not mating to a savage is a good thing to know. But does mating to my step-sibling sound any better? I fidgeted with my fingers nervously. Ryan sensed that and put his hand atop of my hand, giving me an assuring tap. “What should we do now?”I mused. “Don’t worry Joy.”Ryan said after a long pause. He held my hand and whispered softly, “Just say you reject me.”
