“Your divorce to Mr. Conrad Meyers, has been finalized.”
Leilani read internally as she stared at the white paper on the coffee table that she had removed from the brown envelope that came in the mail that evening as mixed emotions surged through her.
She has read it a hundred times but still couldn't believe that it was truly happening.
Three years ago, she fell in love with her ex-husband and they decided to take the next step in their relationship as husband and wife, only for it to end drastically when he decided to cheat on her one year ago during Christmas.
When Conrad had proposed to Leilani, she had thought that she was the luckiest woman on earth.
She wasn't considered as beautiful or sexy as the previous women he had dated, in fact, compared to the other women in his life, she knew that she was at the bottom barrel.
The ugly duckling and that's why when he chose to marry her, she was beyond ecstatic.
She felt like she had been given her greatest wish but what she didn't know was that her wish came with a price. Three years of love, pain and suffering washed down the drain like it meant nothing to him.
Conrad didn't even think twice before ruining their relationship. He not only cheated on her but also decided to elope with his mistress who turned out to be her younger sister.
"I don't love you anymore, Lani." He had told her that cold, fateful night. "This marriage isn't going to work out between the two of us. I deserve better and so do you."
In other words, he called her trash that needed to be discarded.
She had been so stressed after the whole fiasco that she lost her unborn baby that she didn't even know that she was carrying.
When she confronted him about it, he pushed her away and told her blatantly that he never really cared about her and that losing her baby was a blessing in disguise cause he wouldn't want a child to come between the new found relationship that he had with Lara, her sister.
Heartbroken and feeling humiliated, she ran away from home and decided to take shelter at her grandmother's house in Glendale, a small city in the UK to start afresh.
She tried to live with the pain of his infidelity but everything came crashing down when he sent her the divorce papers three months later with an invitation to his marriage ceremony with Lara.
Leilani had thought that she would never have survived it until now.
Looking at these papers did nothing but only remind her of the pain that she had left behind and now, she'd have to live with this burden for the rest of her life.
"Delivery for Mrs Meyers." Leilani heard the doorbell ring and reluctantly stood up to answer. She opened it to see a delivery man from the bakery store where she had ordered some treats.
He was smiling cheerfully, spreading the holiday spirit that no one even asked for.
She looked around the busy street to see different families setting up their Christmas decorations and having fun in the snow.
She could hear holiday music, the smell of oven baked meals as they drifted through the cold air. This would've been her life if Conrad hadn't destroyed what's left of their marriage.
"It's Leilani." She corrected him with a dejected sigh. The divorce has been finalized so there's no point in keeping Conrad's last name anymore.
"I'm sorry, Miss." He apologized but she couldn't care less. Instead, she tipped him off and shut the door in his face before making her way over to the couch.
Her house is a mess. Christmas for her is nothing but a sad memory because it's the day that Conrad cheated and broke up with her so she didn't feel like celebrating it anymore.
"Ho! Ho!! Ho!!!" The jolly voice of Anne, her best-friend echoed through the front porch before she marched into the house.
Leilani quickly hid the signed divorce papers so that she doesn't see it. Anne, has always hated Conrad and she didn't want her to throw a fit because of this.
"Hello, best friend." She greeted, her heels gently tapping on the floor as she walked before taking off her jacket to expose what's underneath.
She was clad in a mini off-the-shoulder body con dress that hugged her figure and exposed her cleavage. Her brunette hair was tied up in a loose bun with a flawless makeup that complimented her beautiful face.
Anne looked very beautiful, which is something that Leilani might never get to experience in this lifetime of hers.
"Oh my goodness Lani! This place looks practically dead." She stated the obvious as she walked through the pile of littered trash scattered on the marble floor.
"Did you even clean? What's Santa going to say when he comes down the chimney to give you presents?" She asked but silence met her questions.
Christmas is overated as far as Leilani was concerned. It's a stupid holiday that shouldn't even be celebrated in the first place.
"Your residence is the only one on the block that isn't decorated. Don't tell me that my bestfriend decided to become a Grinch this holiday." She mocked but Lani only tore the wrap on the scone to take a bite, ignoring her outbursts.
"Where's grandma Patty?" Anne stared at her in disgust as she folded her hands over her chest. "I know that she wouldn't let you ruin her holiday spirit like this."
"Patty is away for Christmas visit at a neighbouring town. She probably won't come back until after since no one has booked a rental reservation this year." She answered and sunk deeper into the couch.
Leilani's grandma runs a rental holiday service during Christmas and just like every year, she's very certain that it'll be fully booked this year as well even though the business isn't doing too well lately.
"So, what will you be doing this holiday?" Anne pushed the papers away from the opposite couch to sit down, facing her. "And don't you dare tell me that you'll be staying home."
"Okay, I won't tell you but that's exactly what I'll be doing for the rest of the holiday." She answered and resumed eating.
"Unbelievable." She scoffed tiredly. "Well, too bad because I won't let you, in my good conscience, waste away like you did last year. I'm going to make it my life mission to spread Christmas joy over your sad, boring life this holiday."
"Good luck trying." She muttered, feeling uninterested.
"Listen, there's a Christmas party tonight at some fancy hotel." Anne started, ignoring her friend's previous remark. "There'll be alcohol, food, name it. And since Patty isn't around then, I want you to come with me."
"Not a chance." Lani refuted adamantly. "In case you're forgetting, I've given up Christmas or any celebration that involves the stupid holiday."
"It's just a party. What's the worse that could happen?" Anne pressured her. "Come on Lani, where's your Christmas spirit?"
"It's just too much for me to handle right now Anne so I'd rather not." Lani turned down her offer even though she knew that Anne would be more persistent.
"Which is why you need a timeout Lani." She left the couch where she was seated and took a seat next to her friend.
"Just come with me to have fun and unwind. You never know what might happen. Staying here isn't going to make the holidays any less painful for you than it already is, trust me. You'll just wallow in your sadness and deprive yourself of a fun evening with me."
Leilani stared at her a little longer than expected. "But I don't even have anything suitable to wear."
"Is that your problem? Leave that to me." Anne stood up and pulled her up to her feet then pushed a strand of frizzy hair behind Lani's ears. "But before that, you've got to take a shower darling because you look like a mess."
"I am a mess." Leilani conceded and proceeded to take off her clothes till she was stark naked before walking into the next room where her bedroom and bathroom was located.
She finished having her bath and changed into the clothes that Anne had picked out for her.
Leilani stared at the see-through dress on her bed in shock. She has never worn anything as revealing like this in her entire life. It's even more sluttier than what she had on but who was she to complain?
She finished up the look with a pair of low black heels and minimal jewelry to match. Anne helped to style her blonde hair into wavy curls and applied gloss on her lips.
"You're ready." Anne clapped her hands excitedly as they both stared at her reflection in the full length mirror. Leilani felt like a pimp on auction but she didn't say a word.
"Let's go. Our ride is here." Anne announced in a rush.
Leilani picked up her purse and they walked out of the house together. After locking up, they got into the car as it drove off to only god knows where.
They arrived at the party after a long drive and Anne led her towards the entrance after they got clearance from the security and managed to settle in.
From the look of things, it felt like a big party. Although, she had no idea who's even hosting it.
"How did you even get an invitation to a party like this?" Leilani asked when they approached the bar area to order drinks.
"Trust me, i have my ways."
Leilani took a seat as her eyes wandered around the exquisite area. In all my life, she has never been to a party like this one before. Hell, she hasn't been to a lot of parties either but this is different.
Their drinks were served and she took a sip when she noticed someone staring at her from the corner of her eyes. At first, she tried to ignore but when it became persistent, she couldn't help but throw her eyes in their direction.
For a moment there, their eyes locked and she is met with the most mesmerizing pair of eyes standing a few metres away from she was seated, talking to someone. She looked away almost immediately.
Each time she stole subtle glances at him, she noticed something that she didn't see the previous time she looked. He was tall, beardless with an appealing face that held a certain sensuality she couldn't fathom.
A swath of wavy hair fell casually on his forehead. His well groomed appearance was a perfect match with his sun tanned skin.
Despite his age which she was guessing to be around his late thirties or early forties, he was devilishly handsome that she almost found herself drooling. He was the perfect description of a walking s*x symbol. Gosh!
He caught her staring and her pulse quickened, causing her to accidentally spill her drink all over her clothes.
"s**t!" She cussed under her breath, feeling embarrassed that he had witnessed that.
"Oh my goodness! Are you okay?" Anne asked, placing her drink on the counter to help her out. "Gosh, how did this happen?"
"I-It's fine. I'm fine. I just need to use the restroom. I'll be right back." She excused herself and quickly ran out of there as fast as her legs could carry her.
She arrived and shut the door behind her as she tried to still her racing heart from spiralling out of control.
"Gosh! What on earth is happening to me?" She groaned, feeling embarrassed. He's just a random stranger. A guy that she doesn't even know.
"Come on Leilani, get a grip and put your f*****g self together right now. You just got officially divorced hours ago." She whispered to herself as she stared at her reflection on the mirror.
Taking a deep breath, she gave herself an encouraging nod before walking out of the restroom. At that moment, she bumped into something or rather, someone that resembled a hard wall.
"f**k! I'm so sorry I..." Leilani's words are stuck in her throat when she came face to face with the supposed wall that she had bumped into.
It was none other than him. The same guy that she had been staring at all evening. This is so not happening right now.
