“Jessica, are you okay?”
Jenny trembled, and I could feel her fear.
After all, facing my enemy—someone I had once idolized as a child—must have been incredibly complicated for her, just like it had been for me.
But she was still willing to stand up for me, and I was so moved that I nearly cried.
I squatted down and gently stroked her head. “I’m fine. Thank you for protecting me. Where’s mom? Did she know you ran out?”
To my surprise, Jenny immediately pouted, her eyes filled with tears.
It seemed like she was about to cry any second. “Jessica… Mom just fell asleep. If she knew Frank came looking for you, her condition might get worse... I didn’t know what to do, but I’m so glad you’re back!”
She said a lot, but all I could hear was the news about Mom’s illness!
