Dinner with my parents, Andrew and Audrey, went amazing! The night when by in a blur, while we talked about all the opportunities I would get if I got the job at Marlowe Industries. We also used most of the night talking about what the ‘newly established’-position possibly could be. Mom was sure I was going to be working right under Mr. Marlowe himself, helping him communicate with his employees, but I convinced her that he already had someone hired to do that. Dad was convinced that I was going to be in their HR-department, where I would be speaking for the employees. Once again, I had to deny and let them know, someone already had that position. So, I made a deal with my parents; I had to go home and research the company and Quentin Nathaniel Marlowe; there had to be a reason as to why he was written on the email as well.
Research had always been my strongest side, so finding out who Quentin Nathaniel Marlowe was, wasn’t difficult at all! Quentin was set to take over the company for his father, Jasper Marlowe when Jasper found it reasonable to retire. Though Quentin had a master’s in International Business and Management, he hadn’t been spending much of his time working at his father’s company. After finishing his degree 2 years ago, he had spent almost every minute traveling the world and partying with a new girl on his arm every night. It’s not that I didn’t get it, Quentin was as handsome as they come with all the right features and a smile that could send you straight to heaven! It’s just that I always imagined an heir to such a big and important company would be spending all his time trying to learn everything he could learn from his father before he had to do everything himself. Jasper and his wife, Delilah, had gotten pregnant with Quentin quite late in life; Delilah was 41 years old; Jasper had been 42 years old, which meant Jasper wasn’t many years away from retiring, leaving the company in Quentin’s hands. But I had to give Quentin some credit; he had recently stepped up his game and taken more responsibility within the company, which also was the reason as to why he had been added onto the email I had received from them.
Marlowe Industries stood for everything I ever wanted to accomplish in life, so being able to go to a job interview there was a dream come through, and I had spent every waking moment preparing for that interview, while also trying to study for the final exam, which was mere minutes away. My final exam was oral, which usually wasn’t a problem for me, but it being my last exam gave me anxiety. Luckily, the anxiety settled down the minute I was shown into the classroom. My presentation of my project went by in a bliss, and the following questions were a mixture of easy and hard questions, but my gut told me I did well. So, when I left the room to let the examiner and censor talk about my grade, I was smiling. This was it, no matter how I went, I knew that there was nothing I could do to change the course of the road, and honestly, I was happy either way.
I barely got seated before the examiner started talking about my overall presentation. She had been very pleased with my project and what I had come to conclude but was also pleased with my answers to both hers and the censor’s questions afterward. “We’re gonna give you an A because you excelled in presenting both the project and the questions we may have had. You were thorough and had little to no weak points,” she had explained. I was exceedingly happy as I left the classroom and, for once, I felt ready to conquer the world on my own with no help from anyone! Typically, you were a whole group working on a project, but I had decided to be on my own and do everything by myself, which had paid off, finally! I packed up everything, then I plugged my earphone into my phone and ears and proceeded to make my way back to the dorm room, where Andrew would be waiting for me, ready to celebrate me finishing my final exam by packing up the rest of my things while we enjoyed a glass of cheap rosé and ate take-away from our favorite Chinese restaurant.
While walking back to the dorm, I sent a picture to Audrey and my parents on Snapchat, letting them know how it had gone. They were all extremely proud of me and couldn’t wait to celebrate with me once again, but we had to save that celebration for graduation day, which was only a few days away now. I finally made it back to the dorm, where Andrew was standing outside waiting for me, when he heard me coming, he put his phone back into his pocket and looked at me, ready for me to tell him my grade. “I got an A!” I squealed as I got close to him. Andrew gasped and picked me up from the floor, “I knew it, didn’t I tell you, you would nail that exam?” he asked me while twirling us around. I nodded as a laugh left my lips; this felt amazing; just being able to laugh and completely let go! Freedom, oh how I’ve missed you!
“Come on, let’s go inside and celebrate,” I told Andrew, to which he placed me back on the ground and let me unlock the door. “And by celebrating you mean packing the rest of your crap, yay!” he sarcastically said, to which I lightly pushed him to the side. “You offered to help me pack up my last things, so you really have nothing to complain about,” I pouted. Andrew rolled his eyes and got his footing back. “I know, dummy,” he said, then he went past me and walked inside the tiny dorm that would only be my home a few days more. Andrew went directly over to the minifridge in the corner of the room. He opened the small fridge and sighed in content as he pulled out a bottle of rosé and two cokes. I found two paper cups, and Andrew poured the pink liquid into them, then we cheered and took a big sip. “I can’t believe you didn’t even like rosé when we first met each other, and now it’s your preferred drink with alcohol,” I laughed as I plotted down on my bed. Andrew stuck out his tongue, then he took another sip and sat down beside me.
“I can’t wait to move into an apartment with you, it’s gonna be so good” he uttered while looking around the room with nothing on the walls; just two beds and two desks left in the room, and a minifridge, can’t forget that! “It’s gonna be awesome! I can’t wait either, just the fact that I’ll get my own room again, that’s something to look forward to,” I told him with a smile. If you didn’t know Andrew and me, you would probably assume that we were a couple. To be honest with you guys, we almost considered it once, but things got all weird when we went on a date, so we decided to just stay friends, and ever since then, we’ve been as close as ever. Andrew had even had a girlfriend for over a year, but when Andrew realized that he would rather move into an apartment with me than his girlfriend, he had broken up with her, letting her know that she wasn’t the one for him; this was only a month ago. “I know you don’t wanna talk about it, but how are you feeling?” I asked Andrew after taking another sip of my rosé. “As I’ve told you before, Grace wasn’t the one for me, so I’m glad it’s over and that she’s now able to move on, but also sad that I no longer have anyone to sleep beside me” he explained, and that was it. He wasn’t gonna talk about it anymore, and it was fine with me. I had done my deed by being a good friend, and that was all I could do.
