CHAPTER 11: THE PAPER I REGRETED

1300 Words
I didn’t sleep. How could I? The last thing I remembered was the sound of the door closing. Not a slam. Worse. A quiet click. Like when someone gives up on you. Liam was gone. They took him at 3:17am. I know because I stared at the clock the whole time two officers had their hands on my arms. My baby. My 4 year old baby with fever and the dinosaur pajamas he refused to take off. "Ma’am, you need to calm down." Calm down? I was screaming. I was kicking. I was begging. "PLEASE HE'S SICK! PLEASE HE NEEDS HIS MEDICINE!" But they didn’t care. And Damian? Damian just stood there. In the hallway. In a black suit at 3am. Like he was waiting for this. His jaw was tight. His hands were in his pockets. And he didn’t look at me. Not once. When the door closed, I slid to the floor. My knees hurt. My throat hurt. My chest felt like someone reached in and ripped my heart out with bare hands. And the worst part? I signed the papers yesterday. #### The lawyer called it "temporary custody transfer." I called it selling my son. Damian said it was the only way to "keep him safe" from Richard. From the media. From the debt. "Sign this, Lila. 30 days. Then we fight for him back together." Together. What a lie. Because "together" doesn’t look like a man who won’t meet your eyes. I didn’t eat. I didn’t drink water. I just sat on the cold tile in the hallway and hugged my own arms. The apartment was too quiet. No cartoons. No "mama, mama". No tiny feet running. At 6am my phone buzzed. Unknown number. I almost didn’t answer. But what if it was about Liam? "Miss Lila?" A woman’s voice. Cold. Professional. "This is CPS. We’re calling to inform you that Liam is safe at the facility. You can schedule a visitation for next Tuesday." Next Tuesday. That was 6 days away. 6 days. "Can I talk to him?" My voice broke. "We’ll see." Click. I threw the phone. It hit the wall and cracked. Good. #### At 9am, there was another knock. I thought it was them coming back for me. It was Damian. He had coffee. Two cups. Like we were normal. Like we didn’t just lose everything. "You look terrible," he said. "Thanks." He stepped inside anyway. The smell of him filled the room and I hated it. Because for one second my body remembered him. Safe. Warm. His arms. "Don’t," I whispered. "Lila." "Don’t say my name like that." He set the coffee down. Didn’t drink it. "Richard filed an emergency motion. If we didn’t sign, he would’ve gotten full custody. And he would’ve taken Liam out of the country." So this was my fault? "Then why didn’t you fight?" I screamed. "Why didn’t YOU stand in front of them and say NO!" "Because I’m the reason he’s in danger in the first place!" Damian finally yelled back. His composure cracked. "My company. My enemies. My mess! And I can’t protect him from jail, Lila!" Jail? Oh. So that was it. The papers on the news last week. Fraud. Embezzlement. I thought it was a mistake. "Are you going to jail?" "I don’t know." He ran a hand through his hair. For the first time he looked young. Scared. "30 days. If I can clear my name in 30 days, I get him back. We get him back." 30 days. The same 30 days on the paper I signed. "You lied to me," I said quietly. "I protected you." "By lying?" He stepped closer. I stepped back. "Please," he said. And god, he sounded desperate. "Let me fix this. Don’t hate me too." Too late. #### I kicked him out. Or I tried to. He left the coffee. He left a folder on the table. "Lawyer contacts. Visitation forms. My bank info in case you need—" "I don’t want your money." "I know." Then he was gone. The apartment was quiet again. I opened the folder. Page after page of legal stuff I didn’t understand. And at the bottom, a photo. It was me and Liam. From last summer. At the park. I was pushing him on the swing. He was laughing. His hair was wild. On the back, Damian’s handwriting. Messy. Rushed. `I’m sorry. I’ll bring him home. -D` I cried. Not pretty crying. Ugly crying. The kind where you can’t breathe and your nose runs and you sound like an animal. Because I missed my son. And I hated the man who promised to keep us safe. #### Day 1 without Liam passed. Day 2 too. I started working again. Because what else was I going to do? Stary said my book was eligible for a contract. _The Secrets in the East Wing_. Irony. I wrote through the tears. 2000 words. 3000. Every heroine in my story was desperate. Just like me. On Day 3, Richard showed up. He didn’t knock. He used a key. "Hello, Lila." My blood went cold. "What are you doing here?" "Checking on my nephew." He smiled. It didn’t reach his eyes. "Shame about the custody thing. But don’t worry. Uncle Richard will take good care of him." "He’s not yours." "He will be." He walked around my apartment. Picked up Liam’s dinosaur. "Cute. He likes this?" "Don’t touch him." Richard put the toy down. "You should’ve married me, you know. Instead of him." He jerked his head toward the door. "Damian can’t protect you. He can’t even protect himself." "Get out." "Or what?" He stepped closer. "You’ll call the police? The same police who took your son?" I grabbed my phone. My hands were shaking so bad I dropped it. Richard laughed. "Relax. I’m just here to deliver a message. Sign the other papers. Give me your parental rights. And I’ll make sure Liam lives like a king." "Never." "Then enjoy your 30 days." He leaned in. His breath smelled like whiskey. "Because after that, Damian goes to prison. And you get nothing." He left. I locked the door. Three locks. And I threw up. #### That night I couldn’t stop shaking. So I did the only thing I could think of. I called Damian. He answered on the first ring. Like he was waiting. "Lila?" "He came here." A pause. "Richard?" "Yes." I heard him curse. Then keys. Then a car starting. "I’m coming." "Don’t. I don’t—" "I’m 10 minutes away." Click. He was there in 8. He didn’t ask to come in. He just stood in the hallway with me. For hours. We didn’t talk. He just... stayed. At 4am, I fell asleep on the floor leaning against the wall. When I woke up, there was a blanket over me. And Damian was gone. But on the floor next to me was another note. `He won’t come back. I called in every favor I have. Visit him Tuesday. 10am. I’ll be there. And Lila? I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m asking you to let me fight. -D` #### Today is Day 4. I haven’t signed Richard’s papers. I haven’t answered his calls. I’m going to that visitation on Tuesday. Even if my legs shake. Even if I break. Because I’m his mom. And desperate heroines don’t give up. They fight. Even when it hurts. Even when the man who broke you is the only one trying to put you back together. So I’m writing this down. So I remember. So when Liam asks me later, "Mama, where were you?" I can say: "I was fighting for you. Every single day." The paper I signed felt like surrender. But this? This feels like war. END OF CHAPTER:11
