The Bonfire Invitation

1463 Words
Aurora's pov The corridors of the palace had grown quieter as evening settled, and a gentle warmth lingered from the day's sunlight fading into the night. I had been wandering the halls aimlessly, still awed by everything around me, when I heard a familiar voice. "Aurora!" I turned to see Kiera, the silver-haired she-wolf who had first shown me the training grounds, smiling easily, relaxed in a way I had yet to see in most of the pack. "I thought you might like this," she said, eyes sparkling. "We're having a bonfire tonight. Some of the pack members will be there-music, stories, food. You should come." My heart skipped. "A... bonfire?" I asked, unsure if I had the right idea in my head. "Yes!" she laughed softly. "It's not just fire. It's... well, a place to relax, to talk, to laugh. You'll see. It's tradition for those new to the pack, in a way. A welcome. And you needn't worry. It's safe, and I'll be there." I hesitated, my fingers twisting nervously. Even small gatherings in this world felt dangerous compared to the quiet of my old village. But her smile was reassuring, warm, and the pull of curiosity was stronger than my fear. "I... I think I'd like that," I admitted, voice soft. "Thank you for inviting me." She grinned and nudged me gently. "Good. It'll be fun. Come as you are-no need to pretend. I promise you'll enjoy it." ___________________________________________________ The bonfire was nothing like I had expected. It wasn’t dark and ominous or filled with lurking danger. It was… alive. Flames crackled at the center of a wide clearing, casting warm, golden light across the gathered Lycans. Laughter echoed through the night, mixing with the sound of music and low conversation. The tension I had felt in the hall was gone—replaced by something almost… normal. Almost. Still, as soon as we stepped into the clearing, the atmosphere shifted. Everyone's eyes turned toward me. My steps faltered, my breath catching as unease crept back in. I instinctively moved a little closer to Kiera, my gaze dropping to the ground. “They’re staring,” I murmured under my breath. “They stare at everything new,” Kiera replied easily. "Here,"Kiera said, leading me to an empty spot near the fire. "Sit. Relax. Let them see you. They won't bite," she grinned. I swallowed and lowered myself to the Weathered log, careful to leave a small distance between myself and the fire. The flames flickered across the faces around me, and I realized... this was different. Not training, not danger, not lessons or lectures. Just warmth. Laughter. Stories and Acceptance. The fire crackled in front of me, sending sparks into the cool night air. I shifted slightly, still feeling a little out of place, but the gentle pull of curiosity nudged me forward. “Hey.” I looked up, startled. A tall male stood in front of me, his expression curious but not unkind. “Aurora, right?” he asked. I smiled, nodding my head. He grinned slightly. “I’m Darius.” There was no judgment in his eyes Just curiosity. “Hi,” I said quietly. “Relax,” he added, glancing at Kiera. “We don’t bite. Not unless we’re told to.” Kiera rolled her eyes. “Ignore him.” Another Lycan approached, he was A broad-shouldered male with wavy dark hair and with a faint scar running down his left cheek. He smiled. "I'm Kael, the beta and Roman's best friend. Welcome to the pack." "Thank you," I murmured. "Don't worry, you'll get used to us." His tone was teasing, but friendly. A smaller she-wolf stepped beside him laughing softly, showing teeth in a careful smile. "I'm Lyra. Don't let Kael scare you. He thinks he's scary, but he's harmless... mostly." She winked at me, and I found myself giggling despite the nerves twisting my stomach. Across the fire, a tall, silent Lycan with short dark brown hair leaned against a tree, eyes flicking toward me briefly before returning to the flames. "I'm Rynn," he said quietly. "If you need anything....ask." His voice was calm, almost soothing, and I nodded, feeling a little braver. I learned quickly that each Lycan had their own rhythm, their own way of speaking, their own quirks. One joked constantly, making the others laugh. Another was stoic, quiet, but observant in a way that made me feel safe. They were all part of something bigger, yet each unique. The firelight danced in their eyes as stories were shared-memories of past hunts, friendly rivalries, jokes, and challenges. I listened, fascinated, slowly feeling the tension in my chest ease. For the first time since being taken from the forest, I felt... part of something... Kiera nudged me again, and I realized I had been quiet for too long. "Are you having fun?" she asked. I nodded, smiling. "Thank you for bringing me along. I didn't expect everyone to be this welcoming and friendly even though they know I'm human." "You were expecting us to be cold and hostile?" she chuckled softly. "Well the way everyone in my village described you all as monsters I hadn't expected this," I said pointing to the Bonfire, the pack members laughing and talking amongst each other acting like normal people and not savage brutes. Kiera gently squeezed my shoulder, giving me a warm smile. "I'm glad you see us as people and not beasts and also I'm happy Roman has someone like you in his life, you seem like a genuine person Aurora." "Thank you Kiera," I said, my gaze flickered to the flames. The fire's warmth, the pack's laughter, and the subtle hum of the bond between me and Roman made me feel... alive. Not just safe, but seen, included, and a little bit like I belonged. And for the first time since arriving in this world of Lycans and power, I realized that being part of the pack-being part of Roman's life-didn't have to be frightening. It could be... home. __________________________________________________ I was so focused on the flames dancing in front of me that I almost didn’t notice when someone sat down beside me. “Mind if I join you?” I turned slightly, startled, only to find Darius lowering himself onto the log next to me. His presence was easy, unforced like he belonged anywhere he chose to be. “Oh—um, no. I don’t mind,” I said. He leaned back slightly, resting his forearms on his knees as he glanced at the fire. “Good. Because Kiera’s been glaring at me like I’m about to scare you off.” I blinked, then glanced across the fire to where Kiera stood. She was, in fact, watching us. I let out a small laugh. “She might be.” Darius smirked. “I’m harmless. Mostly.” “Mostly?” I echoed, raising a brow. “Well,” he said, shrugging lightly, “depends who you ask.” A soft laugh slipped from me again easier this time. There was a brief silence, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Just… quiet. Then he glanced at me, curiosity flickering in his eyes. “So,” he said, tilting his head slightly, “what’s it like?” I frowned a little. “What do you mean?” “Being human,” he clarified. “Your life… before all this.” Before all this. The words settled over me, heavier than they should have. For a moment, I hesitated but then I didn’t. Because for once… someone was asking not out of judgment. Just curiosity. “It’s… simple,” I said slowly. “Or it was.” He didn’t interrupt. Just listened and I appreciated that. “We don’t have palaces or… any of this,” I gestured vaguely to the clearing, the people, the life surrounding us. “Eldermist is small. Quiet. Everyone knows everyone.” “Sounds peaceful,” he murmured. “It is,” I said softly, a small smile forming. “Or at least, it was before the fear got worse.” “The Beast,” he said. I nodded. “We grew up with the stories,” I continued. “Warnings, mostly. Don’t go near the forest. Don’t wander alone. Stay inside when the moon is full.” I let out a quiet breath. “My parents take it more seriously than most.” “And you?” he asked. I huffed a small laugh. “I used to think it was all just… stories. Something to scare kids.” “And now?” His tone was lighter, but his gaze was knowing. I glanced at the fire, watching the flames flicker. “Now I know better.” Darius chuckled softly. “Fair enough.”
