Chapter Five: Echoes in the Dark

1125 Words
Lucian Kane stood frozen, his blade hanging loosely in his hand. Clara’s words echoed in his mind: It saved me. For a moment, the world seemed to shift beneath his feet. The Alpha, the creature he had hunted for so long, had spared her life—and not just spared her, but protected her. Clara clung to him, trembling. “Lucian, it didn’t want to hurt me,” she whispered.I didn’t understand it, but it kept the others away. It brought me here.” Lucian’s jaw tightened as he turned his gaze back to the massive werewolf standing before him. The Alpha was silent, its yellow eyes watching him with intelligence that sent a chill down his spine. It didn’t growl or snarl. It didn’t attack. “What are you playing at?” Lucian demanded, his voice low and edged with frustration. “If you’ve done this to toy with me, I’ll—” The Alpha tilted its head slightly, a gesture that almost seemed… human. It stepped back from the altar, keeping its gaze fixed on Lucian and Clara. Lucian’s grip on his weapon tightened. He didn’t trust this creature—not after everything he had seen. But Clara’s presence, alive and unharmed, stopped him from acting on instinct. “Lucian,” Clara whispered, pulling in her arm. “We have to go." Please.” He nodded, his heart pounding. “Stay close to me,” he said, keeping his voice steady. They began to back away slowly, Lucian’s blade still raised between them and the Alpha. The beast didn’t follow. It simply stood there, watching as they retreated into the shadowed forest. As they moved deeper into the trees, Clara stumbled, her legs weak from exhaustion. Lucian caught her, his concern overtaking his focus on the hunt. “We’ll rest for a moment,” he said, guiding her to sit on a fallen log. Clara nodded, her face pale. “I thought I’d never see you again,” she said, tears brimming in her eyes. “I thought… I thought it would kill me.” Lucian knelt beside her, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You’re safe now,” he said firmly. “I won’t let anything happen to you.” She looked at him, her eyes filled with fear and confusion. “Lucian, I don’t understand. Why didn’t it hurt me? Why did it protect me?” Lucian exhaled, his thoughts tangled. “I don’t know,” he admitted. But we’re getting out of here. Whatever the reasons, I won’t risk you being near it again.” Clara hesitated, glancing over her shoulder in the direction they had come. “It’s not what you think,” she said softly. “It’s… different.” Lucian’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?” “It wasn’t just a monster,” Clara said, her voice trembling. It spoke to me. Not with words, but… somehow I understood it. It didn’t want to hurt anyone.” Lucian stared at her, his heart sinking. “Clara, they killed our family. They’re killers. Whatever you think you feel, it’s trying to manipulate you.” She shook her head. “No, Lucian. It’s more than that. It’s trying to stop something.” “Stop what?” Clara opened her mouth to speak but froze, her eyes widening. “Lucian…” A low growl rumbled from the darkness, sending a shiver down Lucian’s spine. He rose quickly, placing himself between Clara and the source of the sound. From the shadows, a pack of werewolves emerged—five of them, their eyes glowing like embers. They moved in unison, their forms sleek and predatory. These weren’t like the Alpha. There was no hesitation in their movements, no sign of restraint. “Run,” Lucian said sharply, gripping his blade. “But—” “Run!” Clara scrambled to her feet and bolted into the forest. Lucian stepped forward, his blade gleaming in the faint moonlight. The pack didn’t wait. They charged, their growls turning into vicious snarls. Lucian met the first with a quick s***h, his blade cutting through its thick fur. The werewolf yelped and fell back, but the others pressed on. Lucian fought with everything he had, his movements honed by years of hunting. His blade found its mark again and again, but the pack was relentless. Their claws raked across his arms, their teeth snapping dangerously close. Blood soaked the ground, both his and theirs, as the battle raged on. Lucian’s breath came in ragged gasps, his strength waning. Then, a deafening roar split the air. The werewolves froze, their ears flattening against their heads. Lucian turned, his chest heaving, and saw the Alpha emerge from the shadows. It was larger than life, its presence commanding. The pack hesitated, their gazes shifting between Lucian and the Alpha. The Alpha growled, low and deep, and the pack retreated, disappearing into the darkness as quickly as they had appeared. Lucian staggered, his blade lowering. The Alpha approached slowly, its glowing eyes fixed on him. “Why?” Lucian rasped, his voice barely audible. “Why did you save me?” The Alpha didn’t respond, but its gaze was steady, almost contemplative. For a moment, Lucian thought he saw something in those eyes—an emotion he couldn’t place. The beast turned and walked away, its massive form blending into the shadows. Lucian sank to his knees, his body trembling. The lines between hunter and hunted, predator and protector, blurred more with every encounter. Lucian found Clara a short distance away, hiding behind a cluster of trees. She ran to him, relief washing over her face. “You’re hurt,” she said, her voice trembling. “I’m fine,” he said, though his injuries told a different story. Clara helped him to his feet, and they began their journey back to the village. The forest was eerily quiet now, the air heavy with unspoken truths. “Lucian,” Clara said after a long silence. “Yeah?” “I think the Alpha wants something from us. It’s not just letting us go. It’s… watching.” Lucian didn’t respond. He couldn’t. The doubts he had been suppressing were now impossible to ignore. What if Clara was right? What if the Alpha wasn’t just a monster? As the first light of dawn broke through the trees, Lucian felt the weight of the hunt pressing down on him like never before. He wasn’t just chasing vengeance anymore. He was chasing answers. And he wasn’t sure he was ready for what he might find. Do you think that's the end of Clara being kidn*pped? No Kate is going to be involved .. How ? Let's see in the next chapter.
