CHAPTER SEVEN
Elena Carter didn’t sleep well that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, Dominic’s voice echoed in her mind.
“I need a wife.”
The words felt heavy. Unreal. Yet impossible to ignore.
She sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers gripping the edge of the mattress as she stared at the floor.
A contract marriage.
It wasn’t something normal people agreed to.
But then again… nothing about her life felt normal anymore.
Her ex-boyfriend had betrayed her.
She had spent a night she couldn’t fully remember.
And now—
She was being asked to marry her boss.
“This is insane…” she whispered.
But deep down, another voice answered.
*You need this.*
Stability.
Money.
A future.
Elena closed her eyes tightly.
She had no one to rely on anymore.
No safety net.
No one to catch her if she fell.
If she said no… what would she go back to?
Nothing.
---
The next morning, Elena stood outside Dominic’s office.
Her heart pounded loudly in her chest.
Once she walked in—
Everything would change.
She raised her hand and knocked.
“Come in.”
His voice was calm, as always.
She stepped inside.
Dominic was already watching her.
Like he had been expecting her.
“Have you decided?” he asked.
Straight to the point.
Elena took a deep breath.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I’ll do it.”
Silence filled the room.
But it didn’t feel empty.
It felt like something had just shifted.
Dominic’s gaze sharpened slightly.
“Are you sure?”
“No,” she admitted honestly.
“But I still choose to do it.”
For a brief moment, something flickered in his eyes.
Respect.
Interest.
Maybe even… approval.
“Good,” he said.
---
He walked toward his desk and pulled out a document.
“The contract,” he explained, placing it in front of her.
Elena stepped closer.
Her eyes scanned the pages.
Marriage duration.
Public appearances.
Living arrangements.
Responsibilities.
Boundaries.
Everything was written clearly.
Cold.
Precise.
Like a business deal.
“This is really happening…” she murmured.
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
“What about… feelings?” she asked quietly.
Dominic looked at her.
“There are none.”
The answer came too easily.
Too firmly.
And for some reason…
It bothered her.
---
Elena picked up the pen.
Her hand trembled slightly.
Once she signed—
There would be no turning back.
She swallowed hard.
Then—
She signed.
Dominic watched her carefully.
The moment she finished, he took the document and signed it as well.
“It’s done,” he said.
---
Elena exhaled slowly.
“I’m your wife now.”
“In public,” he corrected.
“Only in public.”
She nodded.
“Right.”
---
“Prepare yourself,” Dominic added.
“You’ll meet my grandmother tonight.”
Elena’s eyes widened.
“Tonight?!”
“Yes.”
“That’s too soon!”
“No,” he said calmly. “It’s necessary.”
Her heart started racing again.
This was moving too fast.
Way too fast.
But she had already agreed.
There was no turning back now.
---
As she left the office, Elena felt a strange mix of emotions.
Fear.
Uncertainty.
And something else she didn’t want to admit.
Excitement.
Her life was changing.
Fast.
And she had no idea what was waiting for her next.
