A NEW BEGINNING

CHAPTER TWO Elena Carter stood in front of the tall glass building, her reflection staring back at her like a stranger she barely recognized. For a moment, she hesitated. Just hours ago, her life had been filled with heartbreak, betrayal, and one reckless decision she couldn’t take back. The memories of the previous night flickered in her mind—the music, the drinks, the stranger whose name she barely remembered. Dominic. Her chest tightened. “No,” she whispered to herself, shaking her head firmly. “Today is not about that.” Today was about survival. About moving forward. Taking a deep breath, Elena straightened her blazer and walked into the building with determination. The cool air of the lobby wrapped around her, bringing a sense of calm she desperately needed. The space was elegant—marble floors, glass walls, and people moving with purpose. It felt like a completely different world from the chaos she had left behind. “Good morning,” the receptionist greeted politely. “How can I help you?” “I’m here for an interview,” Elena replied, offering a small but confident smile. “Name?” “Elena Carter.” The receptionist checked her system and nodded. “You’re expected. Please take the elevator to the 18th floor. The HR department will meet you there.” “Thank you.” As Elena stepped into the elevator, her heart began to race. She clasped her hands together, trying to steady herself. This was her chance. She couldn’t afford to mess it up. The elevator doors opened with a soft chime, revealing a sleek office space filled with quiet efficiency. A woman in a neat suit approached her almost immediately. “Ms. Carter?” she asked. “Yes.” “I’m from HR. Please follow me.” Elena walked beside her, taking in her surroundings. Everything was so polished, so controlled—it made her feel both intimidated and motivated at the same time. They entered a conference room, and Elena was asked to sit. A few moments later, two interviewers joined her, their expressions professional but not unkind. “Tell us about yourself,” one of them began. Elena inhaled softly before answering. She spoke about her education, her experience, her determination to grow. At first, her voice was slightly shaky, but as she continued, confidence began to build. She wasn’t just a girl who had been betrayed. She wasn’t just someone running from her past. She was capable. Strong. Focused. The questions continued—about problem-solving, teamwork, handling pressure—and Elena answered each one carefully, putting her best self forward. Time seemed to pass quickly. Before she knew it, the interview was over. “Thank you, Ms. Carter,” one of them said, offering a small smile. “We’ll review your application and get back to you soon.” Elena stood, nodding politely. “Thank you for the opportunity.” As she left the building, the tension in her shoulders slowly eased. She exhaled deeply, looking up at the sky. “I did my best,” she murmured. And for the first time in a while… that felt enough. --- The next morning, Elena was sitting at her small dining table, staring at her phone. She hadn’t slept much. Every time she closed her eyes, flashes of the past returned—her ex-boyfriend, her best friend, and the night that changed everything. Her phone suddenly rang, snapping her out of her thoughts. Her heart skipped. Unknown number. She hesitated before answering. “Hello?” “Good morning, is this Ms. Elena Carter?” “Yes, speaking.” “This is from Wolfe Industries. We’re pleased to inform you that you’ve been selected for the position.” For a moment, Elena couldn’t speak. “I… I got it?” she finally whispered, her voice filled with disbelief. “Yes. Congratulations. You’ll be starting immediately. Details will be sent to your email.” “Thank you… thank you so much.” The call ended, and Elena sat there in silence. Then suddenly— She laughed. A real, genuine laugh. “I got the job,” she said out loud, almost like she needed to hear it to believe it. Tears filled her eyes, but this time, they weren’t from pain. They were from relief. From hope. Maybe… just maybe… this was her chance to start over. To build something new. To become someone stronger. --- Later that day, Elena prepared for her first day at work. She carefully chose her outfit, making sure it was neat and professional. Every detail mattered. Standing in front of the mirror, she looked at herself again. “You can do this,” she said softly. “You’re not that girl anymore.” With one last deep breath, she grabbed her bag and stepped out of her apartment. The past would not define her. Not anymore. What she didn’t know… Was that her past had already followed her into this new beginning. And very soon— She would come face to face with it.
