Chapter Two

1043 Words
Eloise Harper’s hands trembled slightly as she gripped the garden shears, the metal sparkling under the mid-morning sun. She stood in the middle of the stretched-out garden behind the Sterling estate, its flowers and properly trimmed hedges and healthy blush a crisp contrast to the tangle of emotions within her. The salty smell of the ocean breeze mixed with the scent of the earth, surrounding her as she prepared for work. But her focus was fractured. Lucas Sterling’s piercing gray eyes and curt demeanor from their earlier interaction replayed in her mind. There was something about him—an air of authority masked by an impenetrable wall of detachment—that made her feel uneasy. Yet, despite his blankness, she couldn’t deny the pull of curiosity he ignited. What had moulded him into his current self? And why did his presence feel both a challenge and a distraction? “Focus, Eloise,” she murmured, snipping at a cluster of overgrown rose bushes. The garden, much like her life, was in great need of pruning and rebirth. She drowned herself in work, letting the rhythmic snip of the shears silence her thoughts. As she moved along the garden, her gaze shifted toward the cliffside, where the ocean stretched beyond the horizon. The view was stunning, a reminder of why she had chosen Seabreeze as her refuge. But the landscape couldn’t expunge the ache that lingered in her chest — an ache born from years of betrayal and self-doubt. Her mind wandered back to Daniel, her son. He was her anchor, the only good reason to keep her smile. But, the contempt and remorse that plagued her persisted. Was she enough for him? Could she give him the stable, happy life he deserved after everything they’d been through? She was startled out of her thoughts by the crunch of footsteps on the gravel surface. As she turned around, she saw Lucas approaching her with an imposing presence against the estate's scenery. “You figured it out early,” he remarked, his voice even but insensitive. Eloise straightened, brushing a stray curl from her face. “I wanted to get a head start. The garden needed attention.” Lucas’s eyes flicked to the rose bushes she had been working on, his expression unreadable. “You’ve done well. But there’s more to this estate than just keeping the garden in order. I trust you’re capable of handling it.” There it was again—the veiled challenge in his tone, as though he were testing her. Eloise met his gaze, determined not to falter. “I’ll do what’s required.” A small smile could be seen at the corner of his lips, but it didn't reach his eyes. “Good. I have no patience for incompetence.” Before she could respond, he turned, his footsteps receding on the stone path. Eloise heaved a sigh of relief, her shoulders visibly relaxing as the tension doused. Lucas Sterling was a puzzle; one she wasn’t sure she wanted to solve. Later that afternoon, Eloise found herself in the estate’s grand kitchen, tidying up after a quick lunch. The sleek countertops shone as they reflected the warm light pouring through the casement windows from the sun. She hummed faintly as she worked, a melody from her childhood sprang up unsolicited. The peaceful moment was disturbed by two voices yelling from the front hall. Eloise froze, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized one of the voices. It was Lucas, his tone sharp and assertive. The other voice was unfamiliar but equally charged with tension. As her curiosity overcame her, she started down the hallway, half lurking behind the doorway. Her eyes widened at what she saw, and she took a careful look. A man stood opposite Lucas, his stance stiff and defiant. He was tall and lean, his dark hair combed back in a way that gave him a sinister edge, with a slight resemblance to Lucas. His distinct features and cold eyes showed petulance, and the scorn on his lips suggested he was no stranger to conflict like this. “You can’t just ignore me, Sterling,” the man said, his voice low and threatening. “We had a deal.” Lucas’s expression remained stoic, though his jaw tightened slightly. And Nathan, I've already informed you that the agreement is off. I refuse to involve myself in your scheme.” Nathan’s scorn deepened. “You think you can just walk away? You owe me, Lucas. Or have you forgotten who pulled you out of the mess Father left behind?” The hostility in the air was almost solid, and Eloise’s pulse quickened as she watched the back-and-forth. Lucas’s grey eyes filled with something dark and dangerous at the mention of 'Father,' his calm facade cracking ever so slightly. His voice was as icy as steel as he continued ‘’I haven’t forgotten, nevertheless, I won’t let you drag me along with you. Leave. Now!” Nathan’s gaze moved toward the hallway, his eyes narrowing as if sensing he was being watched. Eloise ducked back quickly, her heart pounding. She pressed herself against the wall, willing herself to remain silent. “This is far from over,” Nathan said, his voice carrying an edge of warning. The front door banged a second later, resounding throughout the home. As Eloise tried to make sense of what she had just witnessed, her mind raced. Nathan was no friend of Lucas’s, and whatever history they shared was far from cordial. But what kind of deal had they been referring to? And why did it feel like Lucas was hiding more than just his past? She returned to the kitchen, to resume her tasks. The encounter had left her with even more questions about Lucas, and she was starting to understand the concerns of the locals. But one thing was clear: Lucas Sterling’s life was far more complicated than she had thought. And whether she liked it or not, she was now caught in the middle. "I’m just a caretaker," she thought to herself. As she worked, Eloise couldn’t shake the feeling that she had arrived at a time when something was set in motion among the Sterling’s. Something she wasn’t entirely prepared for.
