The rain that saw her smile

Chapter 7: The Rain That Saw Her Smile Alicia stood by the window, watching the rain fall in delicate threads against the glass. The world outside was muted in shades of grey, yet inside her chest, a storm of emotions bloomed in full color. She didn’t know what to make of the night they spent together—the way his voice had gentled when he spoke to her, how he had looked at her like she was something fragile and rare. And then the morning had come, and with it, silence. Travis was gone. No goodbye. No note. Just the echo of last night’s warmth still tangled in the sheets. She told herself not to cry. There was nothing to cry about. He was never hers, not really. Maybe she had just imagined it—that connection, the unspoken closeness. But the ache in her chest whispered otherwise. She went about her morning quietly, brushing her hair, putting on the same cardigan she always wore when she felt lost. Then, she sat on the edge of the bed, gripping her journal like it could explain the whirlwind that was her heart. Suddenly, her phone buzzed. Message from “Unknown”: Meet me at the greenhouse. Now. Her fingers trembled. She knew it was him. --- The greenhouse stood at the edge of the estate, nestled behind towering trees and misty hedges. The kind of place that could keep secrets in its soil. She arrived, slightly breathless, rain droplets on her cheeks. The door creaked open slowly. There he was. Travis. Standing among blooming hydrangeas, raindrops glistening in his hair. He wasn’t in his usual suits—just a soft sweater and slacks, looking more like a boy than the billionaire everyone whispered about. Their eyes met. And it was like time stilled. “I left this morning because I didn’t trust myself to stay,” he said, voice husky with honesty. Alicia blinked, unsure of what he meant. “I wanted to stay,” he continued, stepping closer. “God, Alicia… I’ve wanted to stay since the moment I saw you.” Her breath caught. “You don’t even know me,” she whispered. He smiled sadly. “Maybe not. But I know the way you calm a room just by walking into it. I know you tilt your head when you’re curious. I know your voice has become my favorite sound in the quiet.” Alicia looked away, emotions rising like waves. “I’m not anyone special.” “You are to me,” he said, his voice almost breaking. Then, in the stillness, he reached into his pocket and held out a tiny pendant—simple, elegant, shaped like a feather. “For when you forget how strong you are.” Her hands trembled as she took it. And then—it happened. Not a kiss full of fire, but a kiss full of something deeper. He leaned in, brushing his lips against her forehead with aching gentleness. It wasn’t the kind of kiss you feel on your skin. It was the kind that settles in your soul. --- Later, they sat on a bench inside the greenhouse, watching the rain dance on the roof above them. “You confuse me,” she admitted quietly. Travis chuckled. “I confuse myself.” “I don’t know how to do this,” she said. “Whatever this is.” “Me neither,” he replied, and there was something beautiful in the honesty of his words. Then, without thinking, she leaned her head on his shoulder. And he didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He just… stayed. That was all she needed. Not promises. Not grand gestures. Just someone who stayed. --- That night, she returned to her room and placed the feather pendant on her bedside table. She didn’t cry, not this time. Instead, she smiled to herself—softly, shyly, like a girl in the early pages of a love story. Because maybe that’s what this was. The beginning. Not of chaos. Not of heartbreak. But of something kind. Of something good. And Alicia, for once, allowed herself to believe… That she might be worth being loved.
