Clover's mind flashed back to the guy who bumped into her when she was on her way home, and the realization hit her like a moving train.
“That guy must have unknowingly switched his phone with mine. Damn it!” She cursed under her breath. “That was the only evidence to prove my innocence. What am I going to do now?” she muttered inaudibly, her heart slamming so loudly that she could barely think.
“I'm still waiting for your proof,” Marcus' deep voice broke into her thoughts.
Clover shuddered, her face reddening with fear and embarrassment as she stumbled over her words, “Actually… I… I…”
“What is it? Cat caught your tongue?” Marcus interjected. “Why did you suddenly go dumb? You were supposed to show me something, right?” He tilted his head quizzically. His eyes were void of emotions as he met her with a cold stare.
“Yes, I wanted to show you something, but this is not my phone. I accidentally switched phones with someone on my way here,” her voice cracked, weak and trembling as she struggled to hold back her tears.
Marcus let out a dry chuckle. “And you expect me to believe that? What do you take me for? You must think I am a five-year-old or something. I have always believed that you were a decent and virtuous woman, but you have proven me wrong. I regret having anything to do with you. Now I know why my mother was against me marrying you. I should have seen your true colours and acted earlier,” he lamented, his tone filled with bitterness and regret.
Marcus' words hung in the air like something too fragile to touch, but Clover would not give up easily. She was bent on proving her innocence.
“Listen to me, everything you just said is wrong. I will go back and look for my phone. I promise to come back with the evidence,” she pressed on, her voice tinged with desperation. She dashed out of the house before Marcus could say another word.
Marcus shrugged. “Good riddance,” he hissed and continued reading his newspaper.
Helen and Louisa sat in the car; they had victorious smirks playing on their lips. “Clover thinks she is smart; she thinks she could just expose us like that. Thankfully, we were able to get the phone when we got the chance. Thank you, Alex, for a job well done,” Louisa said as she took the phone from Alex and handed him a check.
“Thanks, ma'am, I have to go now.” Alex received the check with a bow and left.
Helen breathed a sigh of relief, a wave of satisfaction coursing through her veins. “Now it is settled, Clover has nothing against us now. I have fulfilled our part of the plan; it's time for you to fulfil your part of the deal. Remember, I know your dirty secret, which you buried many years ago. I will not hesitate to show it to the whole world if you don't meet up with my demands,” she grinned, her eyes twinkling with an air of mischief.
Louissa glanced at her, an uncomfortable look crossing her face, but she quickly masked it with a smile.
“There's nothing to worry about. I am a woman of my word, and I will fulfil my promise to you. We need to leave this place now before anyone suspects us.” She beckoned to the driver, and he drove off immediately.
Clover wandered the streets, her eyes darting around the corners, hoping to see the man who had earlier bumped into her, but to no avail. Broken and exhausted, she decided to stop over in an open park and have some rest.
She settled on a bench and buried her face in her palms to clear her head. Her hand went down to her stomach, and she rubbed it softly. The events of the day replayed in her head like a cursed mantra.
“My best friend connived with my mother-in-law to ruin my marriage. Why would Helen do this to me? What does she stand to gain from all this? As if that was not enough, my phone got switched by an unknown person, and it's difficult for me to find him.” Her voice filled with pain and bitterness. Tears filled her eyes and made their way down her cheeks as she cried out all her emotions.
After crying for some hours, she used the back of her hand to wipe off her tears aggressively. “No matter what happens, I need to tell Marcus about this pregnancy; he deserves to know that our little angel is growing inside of me. I will go back to the house again and tell him about it; maybe he will finally give me a listening ear,” she said with an air of hope in her voice.
She took a cab back to the house and got inside. She met Marcus sitting in the same position she had left him some hours ago.
As soon as Marcus's gaze landed on her, he let out an exasperated sigh: “Oh, it's you again. What other story have you come up with this time?” He drawled sarcastically.
“Mark, I'm pregnant; I'm carrying our child.” She blurted out with a shaky smile on her face.
Marcus tilted his head backwards and let out a cold, mocking laugh. “I knew it; I knew you would come back with another trick since your last plan failed. Sorry to disappoint you, I'm not falling for this,” he sneered.
“I'm not joking, Marcus; I'm truly pregnant. We're having a baby,” Clover interjected, her voice dripping with emotion as she showed him the ultrasound.
Marcus took the ultrasound and glanced at it; his gaze softened for a split second before it shifted into a frown.
“And what if you are pregnant? The child is certainly not mine. It probably belongs to one of your lovers; you can take the baby to any of them,” he said with a huff; there was no pang of emotion in his voice.
Clover swallowed painfully; Marcus's words felt like a knife to her heart, each one slicing deeper than the last.
“Marcus, how can you deny your child? We have waited many years for this child. Why are you too blind to realize that our prayers have finally been answered?” she asked, her words revealing a lingering bitterness in her heart.
Marcus clenched his fist; the disgust in the pit of his stomach rose back to his gut, threatening to spill. He sprang to his feet and shot her a look, his gaze sharp and piercing.
“You know what, I have had enough of all this nonsense,” he shrieked, stamping his feet hard on the tiled floor. He lifted some papers from the table and flung them at Clover.
Clover picked up the paper, and her eyes widened in shock upon realizing what they were: “Divorce papers?” Her hands trembled, and her voice was shaky.
“Yes, they are divorce papers, duly signed by me; now sign your part so that we can part ways for good,” he replied sharply, his tone unapologetic.
Clover clutched her chest. She felt like her heart was going to rip out. She glanced at the divorce papers again and looked up at Marcus.
“No, Marcus, this can't be true. You can't divorce me just like that after all the love we have shared all these years,” she said in between sobs, hot tears streaming down her face.
“And tell me why my son should not divorce a promiscuous girl like you.“ Louisa’s cold voice sliced through the air as she walked into the living room, a wicked smile playing on her lips.
“Thank God, Marcus is already seeing you for who you are and has finally done what he should have done many years ago. Please sign the divorce papers so that he can get married to the new woman in his life,” she scoffed, her expression twisting with disgust.
Clover tilted her head to the side, her brows knitting in surprise. “A new woman in his life? You already have a replacement for me?” She asked, her heart sank even further as she felt her whole world crumbling before her.
“Of course he does,” a female voice broke into the conversation as she walked out of the bedroom. “Marcus deserves to be happy, and I’m here to give him all the happiness that you couldn’t give him,” she said as she sat on Marcus’ lap and wrapped her hand around his shoulder, planting a soft kiss on his lips.
Clover's heart skipped a beat, and her mouth fell open in shock upon realizing who the lady was: “Helen!! So you are a new woman. How could you?”
