Hour 1.
The first wave came immediately - three Veil constructs, humanoid shapes of compressed energy, attacking from three directions. Leo's Veil Step saved him from the first two. The third caught him across the back with a blow that sent him sprawling across the stone floor.
Get up.
He got up. The constructs didn't pause. Didn't tire. The Crucible was designed to push without mercy, to test without respite.
Leo fought.
Hour 6.
He'd survived six waves. Each one harder than the last - more constructs, more complex attack patterns, environmental hazards that shifted the floor beneath his feet and sent bursts of Veil energy erupting from the walls. He was bleeding from a dozen small wounds. His energy reserves were at forty percent. The system had stopped giving him progress updates - there was no room for distraction.
He found a narrow alcove in the Threshold wall and collapsed into it, gasping. The constructs wouldn't find him here - the Crucible had programmed safe zones, brief respites between waves. He had twelve minutes.
His mind drifted. Backward. To before.
He was eight years old, sitting at the kitchen table, a half-finished model of the Golden Gate Bridge spread before him. His father sat across from him, helping him glue the tiny suspension cables into place.
"Why did you become an engineer, Dad?"
"Because I wanted to build things that would last." David Chen's hands were steady, his smile warm. "Bridges. Buildings. Things that people could use and depend on. Things that would still be standing long after I was gone."
"That's what I want to do too."
"Then you will. You have the same look I did at your age. The same hunger to understand how things fit together." He reached across the table and ruffled Leo's hair. "You're going to build amazing things someday, Leo. I know it."
"You'll be there to see them, right?"
David hesitated - just for a moment, just long enough that Leo noticed. "Of course I will."
Leo opened his eyes. The twelve minutes were up. The next wave was coming.
He stood.
Hour 24.
Halfway.
Leo had lost track of how many waves he'd survived. His body was a map of bruises and exhaustion, his Veil energy flickering at the edge of depletion. He'd learned to conserve - to use Veil Step only when absolutely necessary, to rely on his enhanced reflexes and combat instincts, to find the rhythm in the chaos.
The Threshold had begun showing him things. Not just constructs. Memories. Fears.
At hour seventeen, he'd seen his mother weeping at the kitchen table, a phone pressed to her ear, the day the police called to say his father was missing. At hour twenty, he'd seen Elena in the parking garage, Mr. Ash's cold smile inches from her face. At hour twenty-two, he'd seen himself - older, alone, standing in the ruins of New Harbor, everyone he'd ever loved gone.
Not real, he told himself. None of it is real.
But the Crucible didn't care what was real. It fed on doubt the way fire fed on oxygen. The more he questioned, the stronger the visions became.
You're going to fail, the Threshold whispered in his father's voice. You're going to fail, and everyone you love is going to die.
"No," Leo said, deflecting a construct's attack with a burst of Veil energy. "No. I'm not my father. I'm not going to fight alone. I'm not going to push everyone away."
"You don't have a choice. The system chose you. The weight is yours to carry."
"The system chose me because I'm a connector. Because I understand something the other hosts didn't." He drove his fist through a construct's chest, dispersing it into light. "Power without connection is just violence. Strength without love is just destruction. I'm not going to be the seventh host who dies alone. I'm going to be the first one who survives."
The Threshold paused. The constructs froze. The visions faded.
And Leo felt something shift inside him - a barrier breaking, a door opening, a flood of Veil energy rushing through his system like water through a broken dam.

The Threshold's defenses deactivated. The constructs dissolved. The hostile environment calmed into the gentle amber glow of the Old Aqueduct's natural state.
The Crucible was over. He had survived.
Leo stood in the center of the chamber, his new power humming through him, his perception expanded beyond anything he'd experienced. He could feel the entire Threshold network - all thirteen seals, pulsing in sync with his heartbeat. He could feel the Ember Network operatives waiting outside, their anxiety and hope. He could feel Shen Wei's tense vigilance, Kiera's guarded optimism.
And he could feel Elena.
She was at the entrance to the Threshold, her Empathic Link blazing with emotion - fear, relief, joy, and something deeper that she hadn't named yet but that Leo could feel as clearly as his own heartbeat.
He walked toward her.
She was standing at the stone archway when he emerged, her arms wrapped around herself, her eyes red from crying and not sleeping. She'd been there the whole forty-eight hours - she hadn't left.
"You look terrible," she said.
"You should see the other Threshold."
She laughed - a wet, shaky sound - and then she was in his arms, her face pressed against his chest, her shoulders shaking. Leo held her, feeling her heartbeat through the Empathic Link, feeling the forty-eight hours of fear and hope and stubborn refusal to give up.
"You're Attuned," she said into his jacket.
"Apparently."
"Good. I was worried I'd have to go in there and drag you out myself."
"I believe you would have tried."
"Absolutely." She pulled back, wiping her eyes. "Now. We have six days until the Convergence, three Thresholds to reclaim, and a Resonant-level enforcer who wants us dead. No pressure."
Leo smiled. "Actually, I think I've stopped saying that."
"Good. It was getting old." She took his hand - the one with the Heartstone - and squeezed. "Welcome back."
"It's good to be back."
They walked out of the Old Aqueduct together, into the gray light of a city that didn't know how close it had come to losing everything. Shen Wei was waiting at the surface, his expression carefully controlled - but Leo's new Heartbeat Sense could feel the relief radiating from him like warmth from a fire.
"Attuned," Shen Wei said. "Not bad for a month."
"A month ago I was an invisible junior draftsman."
"A month ago you were waiting for someone to notice you. Now you're Attuned, leading a resistance movement, bonded to one of the most powerful Veil artifacts in existence, and apparently in love with a journalist who keeps threatening to drag you out of hostile Thresholds." Shen Wei allowed himself a small smile. "I'd say that's significant progress."
"She's not- we're not-" Leo glanced at Elena, who raised an eyebrow. "It's complicated."
"It always is." Shen Wei turned and started walking toward the city. "Come. You need food, rest, and a full briefing on what you missed. The Circle has been busy while you were in the Crucible."
"How busy?"
"Three more Thresholds have gone critical. We're running out of time."
