CHAPTER THIRTEEN Marc never wanted to visit the subject of his mother’s autopsy but recent events spur him on. A memory here and there. A flash of an image. A desire to know. He shows his credentials to the coroner on duty and asks for the file on his mother’s case. “That’s more than 15 years ago,” the coroner reminds him. “Is it in your computer?” “No, we didn’t go fully digital until 10 years ago. It’s still in a paper file.” This is not Marc’s first visit to the medical examiner’s office. He has had to accompany a client to identify a loved one, to watch them break down in despair, or even bid good riddance to an abusive spouse.
