The shadow path was like walking through a nightmare made of liquid velvet.
Cold, absolute darkness pressed against Evadne from every angle, yet she refused to let her knees buckle. Cassian led the way, his midnight-black robes cutting a sharp silhouette through the gloom, while Kaelen walked close behind her. The elven warrior’s large, calloused hand was wrapped firmly around Eva’s waist, practically fusing her side to his scorching-hot body.
"If your shadows slip even a fraction, mage," Kaelen warned, his voice a low, vibrating snarl that echoed in the void, "I will tear your throat out before we hit the ground."
Cassian didn't look back, but his smooth, mocking chuckle cut through the dark. "Save your breath, hound. Maintaining this path requires focus, and your barking is a tedious distraction."
Eva could feel the thick, suffocating tension radiating between them, but her attention was drawn to something else. The shadow magic wasn't just surrounding them; it was actively reaching for them. Wisps of black mist danced along the hem of her ruined silk gown, slowly creeping upward like phantom fingers.
Suddenly, a particularly thick coil of shadow wrapped around her ankle, its icy grip sending a sharp, intoxicating shockwave straight up her spine. Eva let out a soft, breathless gasp, her body tensing.
Instantly, Kaelen’s grip on her waist tightened to a bruising degree, his amber eyes flashing with lethal intent in the darkness. "What did I just say, Cassian? Keep your filthy magic off her!"
"I am doing nothing," Cassian said, halting abruptly. He turned around, the pale planes of his face catching the faint, eerie light of his own magic. His icy-blue eyes dropped down to where the shadow was twining around Eva’s leg. Instead of dispersing it, his gaze darkened, a slow, predatory fascination taking over his expression. "It seems my magic has a mind of its own when it comes to our little star. It recognizes what it wants."
Before Kaelen could lunge, Eva took a sharp step forward, pulling her leg free from the shadow's embrace. She glared directly at Cassian, her violet eyes flashing with a fierce, untamed fire.
"Control your magic, Mage, or I will find a way to burn it out of you," Eva hissed, her voice laced with a lethal promise that made Cassian’s breath hitch.
Cassian’s toxic smirk widened. He took a predatory step closer, invading her personal space until the scent of crushed mint and ancient parchment completely overwhelmed her. He leaned down, his eyes locking onto her plump lips before rising to meet her defiant stare.
"Oh, I would love to see you try," Cassian whispered, his voice dropping into an intimate, obsessive purr. "The fire in you is a delectable thing, Evadne. It makes me want to bend you until you break."
Kaelen roared, shoving his way between them and pressing Eva protectively behind his broad back. His massive broadsword hummed to life, the golden energy slicing through the darkness and casting a harsh glow over the trio. "Touch her again, and we die in this void together. I don't care."
Eva pressed her hand against Kaelen’s tense back, feeling the frantic, heavy beat of his heart. She could feel the absolute obsession rolling off both men—Kaelen’s fierce, protective warmth and Cassian’s cold, consuming dark hunger. They were officially trapped together, and the air was getting too hot to breathe.
With a final, sharp glance from Cassian, the shadows abruptly parted, and the trio stepped out into the blinding, moonlit expanse of a jagged mountain cliff side. They had bypassed the guards, but the real danger was now inside the group.
