Chapter 7: A Shared Sanctuary

The mountain wind howled across the jagged plateau, whipping Evadne’s silver-white hair wildly across her face. Below them, a vast, unfamiliar expanse of jagged peaks and shadowed valleys stretched into the midnight horizon. They had escaped the high guards, but the air out here was freezing. Eva shivered, her ruined silk gown offering zero protection against the brutal mountain chill. Instantly, Kaelen moved. Without a word, he sheathed his broadsword and unclasped his heavy, fur-lined leather cloak. With a gentleness that completely contrasted his feral warrior aura, he draped it over Eva’s shoulders, wrapping her up tightly. The cloak was massive, completely enveloping her, and it carried his intoxicating scent of rain, pine, and pure male warmth. "Better?" Kaelen murmured, his hands lingering on her shoulders. His amber eyes dragged over her face, filled with a raw, desperate need to ensure she was alright. "Yes. Thank you, Kaelen," Eva said, looking up at him. She didn't shrink away; instead, she stepped a fraction closer to his radiating heat, her violet eyes soft but resilient. A sharp, mocking applaud cut through the quiet. "How touching," Cassian sneered, leaning casually against a jagged rock formation a few paces away. His icy-blue eyes scanned the perimeter before landing heavily on Eva, his gaze darkening as he saw her wrapped in the elf's clothing. "But we cannot stay in the open. The high priests possess tracking spells that can pierce even my shadow trails if we linger." "Then where do we go, Mage?" Kaelen snapped, stepping in front of Eva to block Cassian’s predatory view. "Your brilliant shortcut brought us to the edge of a cliff." "We go down," Cassian replied smoothly. He gestured toward a narrow, concealed path carving into the side of the mountain. "There is an abandoned outpost an hour's hike from here. It is warded against scrying magic. We stay the night there." The hike down was grueling, but Eva refused to complain or slow them down. She kept pace, her jaw set, using Kaelen’s solid shoulder for balance whenever the gravel slipped beneath her ruined slippers. More than once, she caught Cassian watching her from the front of the line, his piercing eyes tracking the fierce determination in her stride with a quiet, dangerous fascination. He clearly expected her to break. She clearly wasn't going to. By the time they reached the outpost—a small, crumbling stone fortress swallowed by ancient vines—the moon was at its peak. Inside, the outpost was bare, containing only a hearth and a single, wide stone platform covered in faded furs. The space was incredibly cramped. Kaelen immediately went to work, using a spark of his golden energy to ignite a roaring fire in the hearth. The amber light danced across the stone walls, bringing much-needed heat to the room. Eva dropped the heavy cloak from her shoulders, sitting down on the edge of the stone platform to inspect her scraped ankles. The torn hem of her dress rode up slightly, exposing the smooth, pale skin of her calves. Both men froze. The silence in the room became thick, suffocatingly hot. Kaelen’s breath hitched, his amber eyes locking onto her exposed skin with a fierce, burning possessiveness. Across the room, Cassian’s elegant posture went entirely rigid. The dark mage took a slow, deliberate step forward, his icy eyes darkening to a shade of midnight as they dragged slowly up her legs, his throat bobbing as he swallowed. "You're bleeding," Kaelen growled low in his chest, a mix of fury and agonizing tenderness ripping through him. He dropped to his knees right between her thighs, his large hands immediately wrapping around her ankles to pull her closer to the edge. His touch was burning, his thumbs stroking the smooth skin of her calves with an obsessive force. "I should have carried you." "It's just a scratch, Kaelen," Eva said, her voice steady, though her heart gave a heavy, erratic thud against her ribs at his proximity. "Let me," Cassian’s smooth voice cut in. Before Kaelen could protest, Cassian glided over, kneeling right beside the elf. The forced proximity between the two rival men made the air practically vibrate with tension. Cassian reached out, his long, pale fingers brushing Kaelen's hand away to touch the scratch on Eva's ankle. His fingers were shockingly hot against her skin, sending a delicious, traitorous shiver straight up her spine. "Elven brute force cannot heal a magical scrape, hound," Cassian murmured, his eyes rising to lock onto Eva’s violet gaze. A dark, intense smirk played on his lips as he felt her pulse jump beneath his fingers. "Lean back, little star. This might sting... or feel incredibly good." Whisps of dark, smoky magic seeped from Cassian’s fingertips, sinking directly into her skin. The pain vanished instantly, replaced by a wave of intense, throbbing heat that rushed straight to her core. Eva let out a soft, breathless gasp, her fingers knotting into the furs beneath her as she stared down at the two incredibly powerful, dangerously obsessed men kneeling at her feet, both of them looking up at her like she was their entire world.
