Chapter 5: Tethers of Light and Dark

594 Words
The cavern erupted into absolute chaos. Kaelen’s broadsword collided with a shield of solid black shadow, creating a shockwave that rattled the stone beneath Eva’s feet. Dust and loose pebbles rained down as the two powerful men clashed, their ambient magic flaring—blinding gold meeting suffocating midnight. "She is mine!" Kaelen roared, his amber eyes completely bloodshot with feral rage. He swung again, his brute force cracking Cassian’s barrier. "You will not touch her, mage!" Cassian glided backward effortlessly, his lips curled into a cold, mocking smirk, though his breathing was slightly shallow. "A creature of your low intellect could never understand her worth," Cassian countered smoothly. With a wave of his hand, three more jagged spikes of shadow shot from the ground, aiming straight for Kaelen’s chest. Eva didn't just stand by and watch. Her wrist still throbbed from Cassian’s bruising grip, a lingering heat pulsing through her veins where his skin had met hers. She scanned the cavern, her violet eyes narrowing. She was done being the prize they fought over; she was going to survive. Noticing the luminescent ivy hanging heavily near the cave's exit, she realized it masked a steep, narrow incline leading upward. If she could distract them, she could find a way out. "Stop it! Both of you!" Eva shouted, her voice ringing with a fierce authority that actually made both men pause for a fraction of a second. Taking advantage of their split-second distraction, Eva rushed forward. She didn't run away from the fight—she ran into it. She snatched Kaelen’s heavy leather traveling pack from the floor, throwing it directly into the path of Cassian’s advancing shadow spikes. The spikes shredded the bag, scattering flints and iron rations, but it bought Kaelen enough time to dodge the lethal blow. Kaelen lunged, grabbing Eva by the waist and pulling her back against his solid, pounding chest. "I told you to stay behind me," he growled, but his voice was thick with a breathless, desperate terror at how close she had come to danger. He squeezed her so tightly her ribs slightly ached, his possessive hold unyielding. "If we stay here, the temple guards will find us both," Eva hissed, her eyes locked onto Cassian, who was watching her with a newfound, dark fascination. She wasn't cowering; her body was flush against Kaelen's heat, but her gaze was a weapon directed at the dark mage. "We need to move." Cassian lowered his hands, the shadows around his wrists dissipating into thin wisps. His icy-blue eyes dragged slowly down Eva’s body, taking in the way she defiantly stood her ground despite the chaos. A low, dark chuckle escaped his throat. "Intelligent, fierce, and entirely unpredictable," Cassian murmured, his voice laced with a dangerous, obsessive admiration. "Very well. The high guards are already surrounding the base of this mountain. You won't make it a mile without my shadow paths, elf." Cassian stepped forward, his eyes locking onto Eva’s violet gaze with an intense, suffocating promise. "I will help you escape. But make no mistake, little star... you are simply moving from one cage to another. And mine is much harder to break." Kaelen’s grip on Eva’s waist tightened until it was nearly bruising, his amber eyes flashing a lethal warning. But as the distant sound of manicures baying echoed from the cavern entrance, they all knew they had no choice. The golden warrior and the dark mage were officially tethered by the same obsession.
