Chapter One: The Silver Cage

576 Words
The Sanctuary of the Sunken Stars had been Evadne’s entire world for nineteen years. Safe, pristine, and entirely untouched by the chaos of the mortal realm, its ivory walls were all she knew. Evadne brushed a long strand of silver-white hair behind her ear, her wide violet eyes reflecting the soft glow of the floating starlight lanterns above. She wore a simple white silk gown that pooled around her ankles, looking every bit the innocent maiden the High Priests claimed she was. But today, the heavy silence of the sanctuary felt less like a sanctuary and more like a cage. A sudden, thunderous crash shattered the peace of the temple. Evadne gasped, pressing a delicate hand to her chest as the ground shuddered beneath her feet. The massive stained-glass dome above cracked, raining shards of colored light down into the sacred pool. Through the dust and debris, a figure materialized. He didn’t belong here. He belonged to the wild, brutal world outside. He was an elf, but not like the serene scholars Evadne had read about. This man was built for war. Broad-shouldered and tall, his sun-kissed skin was streaked with dirt and dark blood. Messy golden hair fell into amber eyes that burned with an intense, predatory focus. In his right hand, he held a massive broadsword that hummed with lethal energy. "Where is the relic?" the stranger growled, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through Evadne's core. She froze, her innocent gaze locking onto his. Fear should have driven her to run, to scream for the temple guards. Instead, she stood rooted to the spot, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Kaelen’s amber eyes swept over the wrecked chamber, finally landing on her. He paused, his aggressive stance faltering just a fraction. For all his fearsome aura, he looked entirely caught off guard by the sight of her. To him, she looked like a fragile spirit conjured from pure starlight—pure, breathtaking, and entirely out of place amidst the violence. "You..." Kaelen breathed, the harsh edge of his voice softening. He took a heavy step toward her, his boots crunching on the shattered glass. "Who are you?" Before Evadne could find her voice, the heavy iron doors of the sanctuary burst open. A dozen temple guards poured into the room, spears leveled at the intruder. "Step away from the Maiden!" the captain roared. Kaelen’s gaze snapped back to the guards, the lethal, feral warrior returning in an instant. "I don't think so," he muttered. In a flash of blinding speed, he closed the distance between himself and Evadne. Before she could even blink, a powerful, calloused hand wrapped gently around her waist. Evadne let out a soft cry as she was lifted effortlessly against his solid, muscular chest. He smelled of rain, pine, and ozone—the intoxicating scent of freedom. "Hold on to me, little star," Kaelen murmured in her ear, his grip tightening protectively. With a roar, he swung his broadsword, unleashing a wave of golden energy that blew the guards backward. Kaelen leaped toward the shattered dome, carrying Evadne out into the open, endless sky. As the wind whipped her silver hair around them, Evadne looked down at the shrinking sanctuary. Her life of innocence was over, and her journey into the wild unknown had just begun.
