Evadne's POV
The suffocating wall of masculine pride, raw territorial fury, and radioactive jealousy radiating from the three men before me was heavy enough to physically warp the chilly frontier air.
To my right, Kaelen stood like an iron monolith, his massive, muscular shoulders rigid beneath his weapons harness. His golden aura was flaring so violently that the loose volcanic shale beneath his heavy combat boots was starting to crack and smoke from the sheer heat. To my left, Cassian was a column of pure, icy malice, his liquid midnight ink snapping and hissing as it coiled across the stones, hungry to dissolve the intruder. And right in front of them stood Zephyr, a scarred, wild predator whose mismatched green and gold eyes dripped with a terrifying, permanent hunger that seemed to strip the clothes right off my back.
They were treating me like a prize. A piece of land to be partitioned, guarded, and fought over by three rival tyrants.
Enough.
The wildfire in my blood didn't just purr anymore; it roared, matching the brutal, chaotic pulse of the frontier wasteland beneath my bare feet. A deep, untamed authority—something forged in the fires of my betrayal at the ivory temple—surged straight up my spine.
I didn't cower behind Kaelen's massive frame. I didn't seek protection in Cassian's shadows. With a slow, deliberate stride, I stepped out from the safety of their defensive perimeter. My structured silk gown, torn and smudged with the black ash of the shadow hound, brushed against the volcanic dirt as I pushed directly between the elven commander and the shadow master.
"Eva, get back!" Kaelen barked, his voice dropping into a frantic, guttural register as he instinctively reached out a large, calloused hand to grab my forearm and pull me backward into his chest piece.
I didn't let him. I swiveled my head, my fierce violet eyes locking into his bloodshot amber gaze with such a lethal, freezing intensity that his fingers instantly froze mid-air.
"Do not lay a hand on me, Commander," I whispered smoothly, my voice carrying a quiet, terrifying weight that echoed off the basalt crags. "Unless you wish to see how quickly your iron melts under my storm."
Kaelen’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle jumped in his temple. His chest heaved against his armor, a wave of pure, agonizing adoration and desperate torment washing over his face as he slowly, submissively lowered his hand, his sword tip dipping just a fraction of an inch toward the ground.
I turned my attention to Cassian, whose pale fingers were still weaving threads of liquid rot magic. "And you," I murmured, stepping closer until his mint and parchment scent completely enveloped me. "Recall your shadows, Mage. If I see a single drop of your ink touch the dirt near my feet without my command, I will burn your midnight shroud to ash."
Cassian’s breath hitched. His icy-blue eyes, completely dilated into pitch-black pools of absolute obsession, narrowed with a slow, dark pleasure. A wicked, toxic smirk curved his pale lips as he smoothly withdrew his magic, bowing his head in a mock gesture of absolute surrender that didn't hide the dark, consuming hunger vibrating through his frame. "As my little star decrees," he purred.
Finally, I cleared the space entirely and walked straight toward Zephyr. The rogue shifter stood his ground, his bare, scarred chest rising and falling as he watched me approach. He was taller than me, broader, a lawless wolf who answered to no king, but I didn't stop until I was standing mere inches from his personal space. The heat radiating off his skin was wild and intoxicating, but I didn't flinch.
I raised Kaelen’s secondary hunting dagger, the blade still stained with green magical residue, and pointed the tip directly at the center of Zephyr's scarred chest, right over his pounding heart.
"You call me a prize, rogue?" I asked, my pouty lips pulling into a sharp, dangerous line as I tilted my chin up to lock into his mismatched eyes. "You think because I am outside the ivory gates, I am a stray looking for a new master? Look at the ash behind me. I do not need a cage, and I certainly do not need a leash. If you or your pack step into my path with the intention of capturing me, you will find out exactly how deep my claws can dig."
Zephyr stared down at the blade pressing against his skin, then up at my face. The wild, cocky grin on his face slowly melted away, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated awe. His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard, his mismatched eyes darkening with a desperate, frantic adoration that was completely out of control.
The frontier didn't own me. I was going to conquer it.
Cassian's POV
To watch a goddess descend from the heavens and tame a pack of wild beasts with nothing but her voice was a form of exquisite torture that I never wanted to end.
I stood perfectly rigid in my midnight robes, my long, pale fingers curling into the fabric as I watched Evadne command the clearing. The absolute, permanent madness in my mind was spiraling into something entirely unhinged. When she had turned those fierce violet eyes on me—when she had threatened to burn my very shadows to ash—a delicious, traitorous thrill had shot straight down my spine.
She was utterly magnificent. A beautiful, destructive wildfire that refused to be contained by Kaelen’s crude iron or my own suffocating dark.
I glided a step closer, my gaze dragging slowly down the curve of her waist, anchoring my thoughts on the sheer power radiating from her small frame. Beside me, the elven commander was practically vibrating with a volatile, radioactive jealousy that he couldn't contain. Kaelen’s fists were clenched at his sides, his amber eyes bloodshot as he tracked the way the rogue shifter was looking at our queen. The soldier wanted to launch himself forward and tear the wolf apart, but Evadne’s sovereign decree held him in a physical chokehold of submission.
"She is going to get us all killed," Kaelen growled low under his breath, his voice a gravelly, agonizing rasp of pure protective terror. "Or she is going to make us crawl."
"Then I suggest you prepare your knees, hound," I whispered smoothly back, my voice a sheet of crackling ice dark with an intimate, obsessive pride. "Because I would gladly watch the world burn to ash if it meant she was the one holding the torch."
Across the shale, the rogue shifter was completely ruined. Zephyr didn't move away from the dagger pressing into his chest. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate breath, his nostrils flaring as he deliberately leaned into the sharp point of the steel, letting a single bead of crimson blood well up against the blade.
"Incredible," Zephyr whispered, his rough, gravelly voice shaking with a sudden, fierce devotion that matched the unhinged cadence of my own obsession. He raised his hands slowly, palms open in a gesture of absolute truce, though his eyes never left her lips. "You've got teeth, little wildfire. I like teeth. The clans out here won't know what hit them. If you want to conquer the frontier... my wolf is yours to ride into battle."
From the ridges above, a dozen low, resonant barks echoed through the basalt crags. The rogue pack was watching from the shadows, their eyes gleaming in the twilight haze. The territory was no longer ours, nor was it the shifter's.
It belonged entirely to Evadne.
