EPISODE THREE
The bell rang, echoing through the grand halls of St. Royal Heights High School. Students shuffled between classrooms, their chatter bouncing off the polished floors and glass windows. Julian Hart moved through the crowd with his usual calm, untouchable demeanor, his hands in his pockets, but there was a tension in his chest he couldnβt ignore. Something in the air felt heavier than usual. He sensed it before he even saw her.
Ariel Collins was walking alone, her backpack slung over one shoulder, head down as she navigated the crowded hallway. Julianβs chest tightened at the sight of her. She looked smaller today, fragile in a way that made him ache inside. Before he could reach her, Vanessa Sterling appeared, her presence sharp and commanding. Her hair shone perfectly under the sunlight streaming through the windows, her uniform pressed and flawless, and every step she took seemed designed to draw attention. Her cold, calculated gaze locked on Ariel, and Julian immediately felt the tension thicken.
Vanessa stepped deliberately in front of Ariel, folding her arms across her chest. βWell, well, well,β she said, her voice carrying across the hallway so that students nearby could hear. βLook whoβs wandering through my halls.β
Ariel looked up, startled, but quickly lowered her eyes. Vanessa leaned closer, her tone dripping with mockery. βJulianβs project partner. Interesting choice. I wonderβ¦ did he choose you, or did you somehow worm your way in?β
A murmur went through the students, their curiosity piqued by the unfolding scene. Arielβs stomach sank, but she refused to let herself appear weak. βI didnβt choose him. We were assigned together,β she said, her voice steady despite the heat rising in her chest.
Vanessa laughed, a sound that cut through the air like glass. βOh, how convenient. Because I saw the way you looked at him yesterday. Donβt lie. Weβre not stupid, you know.β
Julianβs fists clenched. He wanted to step forward, to shield her from Vanessaβs cruelty, but he knew any direct confrontation could escalate her wrath. Vanessa had a way of twisting situations to her favor, and Julian had seen it too many times before.
Vanessa took a deliberate step closer. βAnd here I thought high school was supposed to teach manners. But some peopleβ¦ some people think they can step into someone elseβs life and justβ¦ exist.β
She gestured at Ariel, making the motion exaggerated, so every student could see. βAnd now sheβs pretending to be innocent? Thatβs rich.β
A few students giggled, while others exchanged nervous whispers. Ariel felt the weight of their eyes, the judgment, the whispers of βpoor scholarship girl,β and she clenched her fists on her backpack straps, refusing to let herself break.
βYou can say whatever you want,β she said slowly, her voice steady, though her pulse raced. βBut your opinion doesnβt define me.β
Vanessaβs smile faltered for a fraction of a second, then returned, sharper than before. βOh, honey,β she said, voice dripping with sarcasm, βI donβt define you. But he does.β
Vanessa stepped even closer, ensuring Julian could see her dominance over the scene. She raised her voice so that every student passing by could hear. βJulian is my boyfriend,β she announced clearly, every word deliberate, weighted with authority. βAnd youβ¦ you are nothing. Just another girl trying to get attention, trying to steal something that isnβt yours. People like youβ¦ you always fail.β
Some students laughed nervously, others gasped. Arielβs cheeks burned, but she refused to cry. She refused to let Vanessa see her fear. Julian, standing nearby, felt his jaw tighten. He wanted to step in, to defend her, but Vanessaβs eyes flicked to him, a silent warning that she would turn anything he said into a weapon against him.
Julian finally stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Ariel, though not completely shielding her. Vanessaβs gaze snapped to him, sharp as a blade.
βJulian,β she said, her voice deceptively sweet, βdonβt make me look foolish in front of everyone.β
Julian met her stare, calm but firm. βVanessa, stop.β
The students in the hallway gasped. No one had ever spoken to Vanessa like that before. Her eyes narrowed, a flash of anger passing through them. βOr what?β she challenged. βYouβll defy me? Is that what you want?β
βYes,β Julian said simply. βIβm not letting you humiliate her anymore.β
Vanessaβs laugh was low, dangerous, almost predatory. βYou think you can just say no? Youβre mine, Julian. You know it. And no scholarship girl no matter how brave she thinks she is can change that.β
Julianβs jaw tightened, his knuckles white. βYouβre wrong.β
Vanessaβs smirk widened, sharp and cruel. βWrong? Julian, youβre letting herβ¦ think sheβs anything more than a distraction. Admit it you canβt leave me. You wonβt leave me.β
Ariel felt her chest constrict. She saw the truth in Julianβs eyes: he was bound not by desire, but by duty, by family, by expectations he could not yet escape.
Vanessaβs voice sharpened, rising to make sure the entire hallway heard. βPeople like her donβt get to touch people like us. She should know her place.β
The whispers turned into commentary. βDid you hear that?β βVanessaβs insane!β βPoor girlβ¦β Arielβs throat tightened. She felt cornered, exposed, but she refused to crumble. She had learned to stand her ground even when the world tried to knock her down.
Julian moved closer to her, his presence a silent shield, though Vanessaβs gaze never left him. He did not touch Ariel, but he was close enough that she could feel the weight of his support.
βVanessa,β he said firmly, voice cutting through the tension, βthis stops now. Youβre crossing a line.β
Vanessaβs eyes flashed with fury. βAm I? Or are you finally realizing she makes you weak? You know she does. You canβt resist her.β
βYes,β Julian said softly, βyouβre wrong.β
He leaned slightly closer to Ariel and, almost under his breath, said words meant only for her. βI donβt care what she says. I wonβt let her hurt you anymore.β
Arielβs eyes met his, and for a fleeting second, the chaos of the hallway disappeared. Despite Vanessaβs cruelty, despite the stares and whispers, Julianβs words felt like a lifeline, a promise that he was still fighting for her, even if trapped by circumstance.
Vanessa, realizing she could not win this small confrontation, stepped back slowly, though her eyes remained sharp and threatening. She threw one last glance at Ariel. βThis isnβt over,β she said, voice cold and deliberate. βI will make sure you regret ever crossing me.β
She swept away through the crowd, leaving whispers in her wake. Students exchanged glances, some with sympathy for Ariel, others in awe at Julian standing up to Vanessa.
Ariel sank onto the bench beneath the old oak tree, her hands shaking. Julian sat beside her quietly. Neither spoke at first. Finally, Ariel whispered, βWhyβ¦ why are you with her if you donβt love her?β
Julian looked away, the weight of his reality pressing down on him. βI have no choice. Not yet. Not until I can find a way out.β
Ariel nodded slowly, understanding more than she should have. βThenβ¦ why fight for me?β
Julianβs gaze softened. βBecause I canβt stop. And because you make me feel alive. Maybe youβre the only one who can remind me what freedom feels like.β
Arielβs heart skipped a beat. She wanted to believe him, to hope, but Vanessaβs shadow loomed over them like a storm cloud.
They stayed there in silence, two hearts caught between duty, desire, and danger. Ariel had learned just how cruel the world could be, how public humiliation could shake her, and how fragile life seemed when the people with power decided to use it against her. And Julian realized the fight wasnβt just for her it was for himself too, to reclaim a part of his life he had never been allowed to own.
In that quiet moment beneath the oak tree, with the hallways still buzzing behind them, they both understood one unspoken truth: the battle was far from over, and the storm that Vanessa had begun was only just gaining strength.
