The Descent into the Echoes

238 Words
The grand ballroom was a cavern of light and shadow, filled with the elite of the supernatural world, all of whom turned with "unresistance attention" as Elara and Valerius appeared. The air was thick with the scent of pine, expensive wine, and the underlying metallic tang of "Dark Obsession". But there was no time for dancing. Silas, the lead Arbiter, stepped forward, his staff striking the floor with a sound that signaled the start of the "Trial of the Lunar Heart". "The girl will enter the Chamber of Echoes now," he declared, his voice a rasping challenge that cut through the music. The "New Crisis" hit Elara with the force of a physical blow. The Chamber was a subterranean vault where the "long suffering" of past failures was said to manifest as physical ghosts. Valerius squeezed her hand, his "God-like" eyes filled with a desperate, silent plea for her to return. She stepped away from him, her obsidian dress swishing against the marble as she walked toward the dark maw of the staircase that led beneath the estate. The tension dragged on as she descended, the lights of the ballroom fading until she was enveloped in a cold, damp darkness that smelled of earth and ancient "Hidden Power". She was alone with her "Superb Intelligence" and her "Sovereign Voice," ready to face the "Impossible Task" that would either grant her the crown or bury her forever.
