Greer
Thea put me in a state of peaceful tranquility. It was weird I wasn’t asleep but I wasn’t awake either I felt like I was floating weightless in the clouds but I knew I wasn’t. I wasn’t ready to deal with Jackson or Dad. I didn’t want to think about them. It was too much so my brain blocked them both out. I concentrated on the wolf trapped in a cage. I remembered the story Luke told of the unspeakable acts that happened in places like that. I hadn’t been on a rescue mission before but it would be a welcome distraction from the implosion that was my life currently.
“Zorina ?”
She didn’t reply but I wasn’t ready to give up. I didn’t want my thoughts to drift.
“Zorina, wake up oh powerful one. We have work to do.”
“Greer I’m here. That little wolf packs a punch.”
“Turns out so do you. That’s a cool power you had up your sleeve. So we produce lightning?”
“Nearly, we have the power of light, so yes it’s most effective as lightning.”
“Fabulous.”
“Was that sarcasm I detect?”
“Of course not, I’m ecstatic that when I lose my s*** lightening appears in my hands. Have you been here today? Do you know what’s going on ?”
“Calm down. Stay with Jackson, you’ll be fine.”
“I certainly won’t be fine with him, but don’t worry I’ll try keep a handle on it.”
“You can’t avoid him forever. I won’t let you.”
“I know, I just need some time, it feels like …I don’t know..fragile.”
“I understand. So does Jackson. He will wait.”
I once again sent the moon goddess a silent thanks for sending me Zorina. She had had my back since she came. Always knowing to say to made me feel better. That little bubble of hope that I was trying to bury deep inside expanded when I thought about Jackson. If he was still here then that meant something right. So much for not thinking about him, that lasted all of five seconds.
I opened my eyes, to see everyone look at me in surprise.
“How are you awake already ?” Thea asked. “Jackson was out for hours.”
Choosing not to reply I sat up, but felt smug for a moment. Only for a moment as I wasn’t going to lie every cell of my body screamed like it was on fire. Except my leg that brushed against Jackson as he was sat on the floor. Jumping back at the sparks I clamped my legs together away from him. Not liking the sudden chill that came with the loss of his contact.
Forcing myself to my feet. I was going to lie I felt a little shaky but nothing I couldn’t handle. I saw him scrambling up beside me.
I had to resist the urge to thrown myself into his arms. Damn this bond.
“Don’t we have a wolf to save ?” I looked at Iris. “I assume you can help me control this.”
I opened my palm and imagined a little ball of lightning. To my surprise it was there.
“Wow, you can do that already. Come on let’s practice.”
“Whoa!!” Shouted Jackson and Oliver at the same time.
“You just woke up” “you can’t be serious” they said at the same time.
I c****d my head at Iris, I knew she would be game.
“Yup.” She smiled and led me outside.
“Let’s go to the training grounds they will be empty now, just in case.”
I didn’t need to look back to know that Jackson and Oliver were following us. I could hear Oliver protesting but Iris just ignored him and pressed on.
We arrived at the training grounds and Iris stood to face me.
“Okay. First things first. I don’t care if you don’t want to but if you feel weak or wobbly. Go to Jackson. My powers don’t work so well on Oli so I don’t usually hurt him. I expect yours should be the same but we will try not to test it.”
I nodded in agreement. I felt stronger already so I didn’t think I would need to ask him for help anyway.
“I find it easier to activate mine when concentrating so first let’s just see what you can do first.”
“Like?”
She pushed her hands forward and a shield of protective mist formed between us.
“See if you can throw your lightning at this.”
Thinking of another lightning ball, one appeared in my palm. I stood for a moment staring at it in amazement before I lobbed it at Iris. It crashed into her shield with an almighty bang, but the shield remained intact.
“Good. Ok now see if you can block me?”
She send a blast of mist my way that knocked me on my a** while the sparks I in my hands went shooting up into the sky and rained down upon us.
“Ah f***” Oliver swore as some rained down across his back.
“Sorry.” I said as I jumped up. My eyes inadvertently scanning Jackson ensuring he was unscathed.
“Try again.” This time I was quicker and a wave of sparks flew at the mist, meeting in almighty boom that sent us both flying across the training grounds.
I grimaced as I landed heavy on my a** again. This time I was shakier when I got to my feet but I ignored it.
“Ok I can see if you can form a beam of light.”
She put up a thicker shield of mist this time. I concentrated on gathering the bolts together to form a beam. After a few attempts they connected and streamed from my palm. I exclaimed in wonder. When they connected with the mist I could smell burning but see no fire. As I pushed harder I felt the shield move. My legs started to shake as I pushed even harder still and I saw the shield weaken but it still held. I continued to force the beam at her as sweat poured down my back and I saw black spots appear only vision, just when I realised I pushed too far I felt arms enclose me and instead of hitting the ground I hit a wall of solid chest and was engulfed in that oaky scent that meant I was safe.
Jackson
Greer woke up like nothing had happened. All her emotions hidden behind her perfect mask. Out in the training field we saw what she could do and it was amazing but I was too full of fear for her to admire it. My heart was in my throat and Onyx was crawling at me to get out.
“Stop her, can’t you see what it’s doing to her… if you don’t stop her RIGHT now I’ll shift and do it myself.”
Her legs were wobbling, I could see her strength fading but I didn’t even know how to get close to her right now. I was sure she didn’t want me to but I saw her look of worry when she zapped us all with her sparks. Her eyes instantly looking for me and it gave me the confidence that she wasn’t going to zap me into next week.
I had to try and help her, before she got hurt. I got to her just as her legs weakened, which was probably the only reason she let me catch her.
“I’m taking her to her room. She is done for the day.” I told Iris, she also looked tired and didn’t argue. Greer couldn’t argue as she was unconscious on my arms now.
Once in her room I resisted the urge to take her to my bed instead. Laying her gently on the bed the sunlight streamed in her window and caused her hair to shimmer like gold.
“Mate is so beautiful, I want to meet Zorina.”
“We need to give them time Onyx.”
“I know. Zorina wants me, and even Greer want you. Why I have no idea.
Jackson the last time they shifted was that night and it put Greer into a coma. She blocked her from shifting again. She will need you to help her. So work out how you are going to do that.”
I knew how hard it was to control your wolf, I didn’t understand how Greer could have managed all these years. Even I could feel the power her wolf yielded. I gazed at my mate in wonder.
“Thea bring me all the books on silver wolves.”
“Why and where ?”
“To Greer’s room. I want to read them.”
There was something more to Greer. I wasn’t willing to leave her so I may as well spend the time trying to work out what it was. Otherwise I would be staring at her like a creep. Marvelling at the dark eyelashes contrasting against her golden skin. I desperately wanted to kiss her full red lips. How could someone be so perfect. I studied her carefully, wanting to commit every perfect detail of her to memory but then I made a silent vow not to ever let her leave so I didn’t have to.
She didn’t want to reject me, when she woke up I was going to make her understand that I was serious about her. I traced my fingers over the spot where my mark would soon lie. The tension in her body started to leave.
Thea brought me the books I asked I settled on the bed beside Greer, rearranging her so her head was nestled safely on my chest and started to read.
Silver wolves were gifts from the moon goddess herself. Each of the founding packs was bestowed wolves with gifts so special they were soon abused.
When the moon goddess saw her silver wolves being hunted she asked her sister for help. Blessing the royal line of with a gold wolf.
The sun goddess was horrified at how her sister’s children behaved and vowed not to help her anymore. Cursing the line of silver that was tainted by greed she vowed the gifts would die with the line.
Silver wolves are considered rare and there were so few royal wolves they are thought to have died out many years ago. As many wolves mated with normal wolves the powers they had lessened. The ones that retained their powers remained linked to their mind and they were stronger than an average wolf but there is no way of recognising a gifted wolf unless you are one yourself.
This was how Iris and Thea knew already. I smiled at the thought of Silver Oak having a silver wolf as it’s luna. When she was ready to accept me, which I was more confident was when not if.
